A good catfish for a planted community tank?
Hi. I am wondering what could be an interesting fish to add to my planted community tank. A catfish perhaps? I had different tanks over the last 11 years, with mostly South American fish. My main tank is a 560L planted community tank and after my fishroom was re-purposed to babyroom, it is my the ...

When are Corys too old to breed?
Hi! A couple of years ago I bred C. paleatus, and now I am starting up again. I think about using my old breeders again, but wonder if they are too old? They are probably about 3½ years old, and I don't want to disrupt their happy life in the community tank if they are past their breeding age alreay. ...

How many bristlenoses in a tank?
How many bristlenoses can I keep in 140G tank? It is a planted community tank with plenty of roots for hiding and I feed with zucchini and cory tablets (for corys really, but the bristlenoses eat them too). I started with three: One female and two males. After a month they started breeding, and a ...

Re: My first plec spawning- Ancistrus sp.3
Hi Carp
Thanks for your answer. I will try to catch some of the small guys and transfer them to a fry tanks and feed them properly. Since the tank is newly setup, there probably isn't much to eat in the gravel yet.

Re: My first plec spawning- Ancistrus sp.3
Hi, the bristlenoses in my community tank are also in happy circumstances . How are the chances for some of the fry to survive to adulthood in the tank ? The largest fish in the tank are two male kribs, maybe 3" long, so I am more concerned about the fry starving. Will the fry get enough to eat from ...

When is tank too deep for corys?
Hi! I am soon getting a new, big tank :) I hope to gather most of my fish in it, among those 5 julii corys. The water will be about 50 cm/ 20" deep (after gravel is added). Is this depth OK for the corys? What should the maximum depth be in a tank with corys? (I once read that the water must not be ...

What is the purpose of Otocinclus' dark lateral line?
Hi, I have been wondering at the purpose of Otocinclus' coloration, especialy the dark lateral line. A similar line is found on unrelated species like the siamese algae eater (Crossocheilus siamensis) and pencil fish (Nannostomus sp). Since the fish have similar patterns, the purpose might be ...

A pair of bristlenoses would be fun, I am just worried about the temperature. The bristlenoses I can get in my area are problably Ancistrus sp(3) (but sold as A. dolichopterus). According to the Cat-elog they prefer the temperature range 22-24° (though I have seen both 23-27° and 23-29°C in other ...

Small Pleco for warm water??
Hi,
I am looking for an algae-eating pleco that will do well in an 85L/22Gl tank with temperature 28-30°C, pH 7.5, GH 18-20. Any recommendations?
Tank mates will be a pair of rams (hence the high temperature), some peaceful tetras and maybe a small school of C. sterbai.
Thanks,
Allan

I see it too - this morning I removed abut 25 dead paleatus fry from their tank (17 L). They hatched two weeks ago. I first put a proper filter in the tank six days ago, so NO2 is still hard to keep down. Hopefully NO2 and mucousy waste will vanish as the tank gets cycled properly, and then it will ...

Snail-eating corys?
Hi, I don't think I have ever seen corys on the list of snail eating fish. But will they eat small snails? I have a planted community tank with platys, silver-tipped tetras, a common bristlenose and six C. trilineatus. There are a some small snails in the tank, but very few grow big. When I clean ...

Aqua tourism in New Jersey?
Hi,
next weekend I'll be visiting my wife in Princeton, New Jersey.
I have seen the local Petcos, and am curious what other attractions a fish lover might find in the area?
We have a car, so a not-so-LFS would certainly be interesting. So would NYC, I just don't know where to start.
Thanks,
Allan

Thanks for your replies - I look forward to see ram fry growing up in the tank. However, it didn't happen this time. I think the parent Rams ate the eggs themselves - apparently this isn't unusual for inexperienced Ram parents. I'll just wait and see. In the mean time I have Peppered Corys laying ...
