Re: What am I? 3-4" in length... black and white spots?
Very young Ameiurus nebulosus show up in ghost shrimp (Palaemonetes paludosus) shipments from Florida on occasion, and their speckled coloration from that region looks very similar to Ameiurus serracanthus . Mine had my hopes up for a while, but they're still very nice looking browns nonetheless. As ...

Re: Possibly Clown Catfish
Did you have to chase it from it's cave to get the shot?
If so, it's stripe placement says (L205) to me, only it looks to be showing a strong stress pattern that's obscuring most of the head spotting.
Of course another pic would confirm it!

Re: What plecos for a 75g tank with EB JD's?
That Pleco does not look like the one the LFS has either. It is smallish, and the owner said they get to about 6" max. It's a black/white fish, like a zebra but not the same from what I understood? They had them before for 50$ 6 months ago and I missed out then. He has an order in now that have ...

Re: Catfish & c*****ds
Greg: With all due respect for your integrity, I would like to point out that a 90g tank is not a suitable size tank for such a large fish - at least not the standard 90g size that is 48 x 18 x 24 inches I have to agree there, and add that a guapote of that size will likely tolerate NO tankmates in ...

Re: Is it really a bat pl*co and a clown pl*co??
The first is definitely Peckoltia sp(l205) , as the very wide & nearly divided mid-body band distinguishes them from similar species...except the rarely-if-ever imported P.brevis of course. I agree that the second is L.joselemai, because Leporacanthicus heterodon doesn't have white tips on it's ...

Re: History of the Common pl*co [Hypostomus]
Though I can't go back all that far in years with my experience in the hobby (late 80's or around there), by then, Pterygoplichthys were already the dominant common by then from what I can remember. I do have a couple older books that seem to accurately identify the pictured suckers as H.plecostomus ...

Re: pl*co tableware
I use a spoon, less pointy parts for them to injure themselves on. This is what I use with great results. I have a few with slim handles that I run completely through their food, and they're holding down the scraps from a whole pineapple I carved-up as I type this.. It did take them a while to ...

Re: Worst case scenario
I don't know how they do it - and I certainly don't want to know- Don't get me wrong here, but I do have a bit of fascination for genetic anomalies. My interest lies only with the novelty of such mutations, so I must admit that I'm VERY curious how all these "balloon" fishes are created ...

Re: Tough catfish for rough tankmates
Thanks for the input guys, but I guess I should've made it more clear that I really am seeking Asian catfish to complete this tank! Yes there's a pleco, but he gets picked-on by my Hypostomus ssp. (don't ask me how he manages w/ the Botias), and he -sortof- fits the theme since Pterygoplichthys run ...

I currently have my 100g (360x45x45cm) set up as an as and Asian-themed tank and it houses several aggressive Botias including; 4 - Yasuhikotakia modesta (yellowfin) 2 - Yasuhikotakia lecontei 1 - Yasuhikotakia eos 2 - Syncrossus berdmorei 1 - Syncrossus helodes Obviously the Y.modesta & S.helodes ...

mr.gobie, is this your fish? http://www.planetcatfish.com/images/full/mochokidae/synodontis/nigrita/8.jpg I've had one of these for several years now, and if I remember correctly there was some debate on whether these are a different species from S.nigrita. I've kept the real S.nigrita in the past ...

Bad fishbase link
Just thought I'd point out that in the species profile for Ancistrus punctatus, the link to fishbase actually points to Ancistrus dolichopterus there.
Figured it was just a leftover from previous mistaken identities, but thanks again for such a wonderful database!

Well as much as I still like some sicklids, and as organized as the Michigan Cichlid Association may be, I've just about lost all interest in "talking shop" about the subject if it drifts to Malawians or Tanganyikans. Now if a rare someone mentions Crenicichla, Paratilapia, Ptychochromis, or even ...

No big horror story here, but I've been there before myself. I have a really old steel stand that holds 2 36" tanks, and it's a bit uneven like it's been bent out of shape a little bit in the past. The 4 curved legs going to the top tank allowed enough give to let the top tank settle just fine, but ...

I myself figured the E-log entry to be accurate, as I raised a couple in the past myself that seemingly stopped growing at the listed 8"SL (probably due to competition from voracious Hypostomus ). Much to my surprise several weeks ago, one was traded in at a local shop that was nearly 11"SL! Even at ...

What happened to Michigan?
The old salts around here tell me that Michigan used to be a hotbed of fishkeeping activity in the 70's, and I know of a good number of companies that started here. Even the first all-glass aquariums (O'Dell) were made right here in Saginaw! OK so living in Saginaw has never been particularly good ...

Opinions differ but this disease has been associated with flagellates (parasites). This may help you. I guess I should've been a little more clear, but I wasn't dismissing the involvement of flagellates. My point was that the initial cause is often environmental or dietary, and the flagellates are ...

I'd also reconsider keeping both species of Mikrogeophagus together too.. I've seen people successfully keep M.ramirezi with M.altispinosa before, but that's more of an exception to the rule in most cases. The Bolivian rams are simply larger & more aggressive, so don't judge them by the overstocked ...

I'm a big fan of giving my plecs veggies that don't turn into such huge piles of "string", like raw turnip/collard greens or arugula, and hard squashes like acorn, butternut, hubbard, buttercup, spaghetti, etc, etc. Occasionally I also use yam/sweet potato because it is somewhat nutrient-rich, but ...

I've never read anything totally conclusive about an exact pathenogenic cause of HLLE (Head & Lateral Line Erosion), but one thing I've seen in ALL cases is unsatisfactory water quality. That 25% water change may be keeping nitrate under control, but the 125g is far from lightly stocked. Now if I ...
