Fair enough.

I remember as kids, catching them in the Rivers and Channels, with a piece of old meat as bait.

I was under the impression that they were like the proverbial 'Goat', and eat anything (tin cans etc).

I had no idea those filters even had sand in them.

I guess my Sister won't appreciate my dismantling her pool filter to investigate.

The poor finnage on the sluggish fish, may be due to harrasment from the others. Symptoms on more than one fish is a problem. Do you know what type of Catfish they are? Have you performed any water testing? It may be worth taking a sample into an Aquarium Outlet, and have them test it for you ...

I've read that the the sand used in Swimming pool filters is a good smooth sand for Cory's.

Has anyone else heard the same?

It's quite amazing, the difference. I'm keeping my old tubes to use around the house. But I've such a backlog now, as the damn things can last years, before they pop. I came across a circuit recently. Or perhaps I should say, I came across a method of "rewiring" the Ballast to the Tubes, that ...

I wonder if, when the fish bunch up at night, they go into 'Meerkat' mode. One watch's whilst the others kip. And then swap over.

My Tetra's don't seem to disturb much when the Cory's do their surface run tho'. And I've had the Cory's flip other fish out of the tank.

I gather that in order to pull the Scuba-Man back up though the throat, that there is plenty of space there. ie, no little sphincters and such, like we have ?

Personally, I'd be more comfortable with enlarging the hole with a neat scalpel cut, and pulling the poor bloke out straight through the side.

I can get Aus $3 for a 1" common BN, at the Aquarium Outlet (more $ for larger size). But they turn around and flog them off for $18. I get the impression they're not as readily available at the moment. Here's one I prepared earlier! http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/9360/jbristlenosefry055qt.jpg

I had similar problems with C.aeneus fry, dying out at about the 10 day stage. I had 'slime' developing in my floating fry enclosures. I don't know that it was fibrous tho'. Hi Shaun, You need to look at the surface area of the bio-medium. Essentially you need living space for the beneficial bacteria to set up shop. Just from my own observations of media I've sighted, the pores of the volcanic rock sort of thing provide much more area than the plastic bio-balls ...

Your budget may play a huge role in selecting your species. $100 would get you a nice collection of Bristlenose & Cory's. I feed my Cory fry liquid, or powdered food, usually the latter.

This tank is on Fermented Yeast CO2, at probably half the rate required for a tank this size (250 litre). CO2 is delivered via a Bubble Maze. I'll be going on to compressed CO2 when a spare couple of hundred dollars shows up. We have quite a low pH, and KH, in our tap water at the moment, so that's ...
