Re: ID my 20 cm fish, please
Looks like nice LDA33? Not 100% on that id, but it is definitely in the Baryancistrus genus.

Re: L30 or L31 what do you think?
Judging by the two dorsal photos I would say you have a pair of L30. The head shape doesn't look wide enough to be a Parancistrus species.

Re: ID help, please. What did I buy - L201, contradens, or other?
It looks to me that you have two species there, both L201 and Hypancistrus contradens. The contradens will have a bulkier appearance with larger spots while the 201s will be more low profile with smaller spots. Also the contradens get larger and the 201s get noticeable odontodes at a smaller size ...

Re: difference between L029 and L082
It appears to me that it is a Hypancistrus, probably contradens. They have very nice spots and are a very lovely fish to keep. If they were L82 they would have cost a lot more, like $200-$300 US dollars.

Re: Retroculus Lapidifer and Metynnis Fasciatus
That is a great combination! I use Metynnis faciatus as dither fish for my group of Retroculus xinguensis, they are far more skittish than the lapidifers in my experieces. That is a beautiful looking tank that you have there.

To me these are A. grixalvii, but I am no expert. The adipose fin on your fish looks noticebly larger than that of the A. cyclopus pics online, which is more like the grixalvii; also the cyclopus are from the Pacific side of the mountains (according to fisbase). The more I look at your pics, the more ...

Re: Pair or not? Zebras
How are you guys sexing them jw? For me experience is my guide. Many would say the top one is male, when the truth is that it is a sexually mature female. The shape of the heads is entirely different, the male's will be wide and spade shaped. In fact I refer to mine as 'shovel heads'. The females ...

From what I have seen they are quite variable. The ones that I had are the largest of any Hypan that I've kept. Some of my males were just beasts. The spots were quite variable in pattern, but were pretty much the same color. Wait until you have fry, they are very different! :-BD If you are on ...

Beautiful Hypancistrus inspector! Tough to find nowadays. Having kept this species I can say that you have some very nice specimens. They are easily the largest Hypancistrus that I have seen in the flesh. My big males were just under 8 inches TL. Again, beautiful hypans!
