Re: Breeding Hemiancistrus subviridis
Sorry to hear that, but at least you have a breeding pair, so you will hopefully get a second chance this winter. Have you considered taking the eggs from the cave and hatch them in a breeder box next time?

Re: Breeding Hemiancistrus subviridis
hi Havaard,
my idea was specially to put the male in a in hänging tank so it will have it's freedom to look after the eggs without defending it's cave against other bigger males...
before yesterday i saw tha male shaking like crazy...another fish was close but i did not check if it was the female. waiting for the next low pressure outside

Today I decided to catch and photograph one of the youngsters with my new camera. It measures only 27mm tl.

27mm is pretty decent size, I'd say - they aren't particularly old, are they?

I am sending pictures in bulks every few months. Its been a while since the last bulk.
There will be an article, and this is the first internet site it will be published. I don`t wan`t to say anything about where it will be printed first, before it is actually printed. Things have to be done in a certain order.

Re: Breeding Hemiancistrus subviridis
There has been a low pressure with high gusty winds the last couple of days. Before that there was heavy rain.
I am mentioning this because I think the male is up to something again. It is difficult to decide to steal the eggs or not. I would really like to see them flock breed without intervention as I do in my Hypancistrus zebra tanks. The method is both easy and beautiful. Also losses are smaller when the male continuously tumbles the eggs with his mouth.

I took out a clutch of around 35 eggs. Last time I did this another female laid her eggs a few days later. Maybe this will happen again. Yeah.. I am a bit greedy

If it happens again, maybe you can leave the second batch with daddy? just to see if it will work? as you mention, that would be both easy and fun to watch!Haavard Stoere wrote: Last time I did this another female laid her eggs a few days later. Maybe this will happen again.

I really should, but it really hurts when whole batches are lost. At the moment I agree, but when the time comes I might change my mind. Especially if artificial hatching works better this time.DutchFry wrote: If it happens again, maybe you can leave the second batch with daddy? just to see if it will work? as you mention, that would be both easy and fun to watch!
All the lights above the tank are turned off. I have added half a dose of Akryflawina to the main tank. The eggs are in a breeder box in the main tank. I have not bothered to use an airlift, since there is plenty of circulation from the power heads with air diffusers. I will feed the fish in the main tank sparingly the next few days to keep bacteria levels low. I will also do minute water changes daily to keep ph steady.

Good news Haavard!Keep us updated.
One question thought....I think i 've heard that Akryflawina can make fish infertile. Are you/or others familiar with this?

I have never heard that, and I hope it is not so. That would be a tragedy. I will have to do some googling on the issue.husky_jim wrote: One question thought....I think i 've heard that Akryflawina can make fish infertile. Are you/or others familiar with this?

Online fishkeepers seldom has secrets. It is nice to get feedbacks and advice.Cristoffer Forssander wrote:It's very ni´ce of you to share all the information! It's really helpfull for us other, planning on breeding these fishes!
I searched "Akryflavin infertility" and found this:
http://fins.actwin.com/killietalk/month ... 00527.html
I am glad I only used one bottle for 300 liters. My tank is 720 liters, so it was around half dose netto. Maybe I should remove it at once with charcoal? What do you guys think?
Edit: I have added charcoal to remove all Akryflawina.
Should I add something else tomorrow? All eggs are fertilized and healthy at the moment.

I don't know how sensitive Hemi-Eggs are, but from my experience with the extra sensitive L183 F0 eggs i only put snails in order to do the job...Haavard Stoere wrote:Online fishkeepers seldom has secrets. Re: Breeding Hemiancistrus subviridis
Thanks:) I have never managed to breed sp. 3 successfully.
I am using snails as last time. Yesterday I had one loss. Today I lost 4 eggs, and my attempts to clean out the dead stuff resulted in 3 premature hatchlings due to my unstaedy hand. Two of these had visible damage and were discarded. One of them is without visible damage and will be kept as an experiment. I assume it will die during the night, but I won`t discard it unntil it shows signs of illness.
The above were my losses the last couple of days. I just counted 27 perfectly healthy eggs. They will hatch tomorrow I think. Unfortunately I need to take a trip to Eastern Norway Thursday-Friday to pick up 10 large Baryancistrus sp. L177 (Iriri Nuggets). I expect significant losses from the hatching process as last time. There will be an update tomorrow evening.
Picture updates will be from the day they start eating, and following weeks, since there is a gap in my fry development documentation. This time I will not lose them into the main tank

Re: Breeding Hemiancistrus subviridis
Today 7 have hatched completely.
One of the hachlings had some kind of problem and was discarded. The one that hatched early yesterday died of course.
23 eggs have not hatched yet, but they are clean and healthy. Late this evening I will help the rest of the fry to escape their eggshells if nessesary.
Counting backwards I can conclude that the size of the latest batch of eggs was 38.

27 have hatched. About half of them hatched with the aid of a scalpel, fingers and a soft paintbrush.

Re: Breeding Hemiancistrus subviridis
I never tried the paintbrush, but I sure will... personally, I use a simple air pipe. I put the pipe into the water with my finger blocking the other side. The water can't come in... Then I place the entrance of the pipe very close to the egg and I "open" the other side, letting the air flow and the water come in, within the egg. Finally I softly push air in the pipe. This go in and out of the pipe is normaly sufficiant to help the fry to hatch without any problem or wound.Haavard Stoere wrote:27 have hatched. Of course, you have to adapt the size of your pipe to the eggs size...
the Potamotrygon adventure has begun...
