since this morning the eggs are gone...i guett eaten by another male as the father was no in his cave... :roll:

Sorry to hear that, but at least you have a breeding pair, so you will hopefully get a second chance this winter. Have you considered taking the eggs from the cave and hatch them in a breeder box next time?

hi Havaard,
my idea was specially to put the male in a in hänging tank so it will have it's freedom to look after the eggs without defending it's cave against other bigger males...

before yesterday i saw tha male shaking like crazy...another fish was close but i did not check if it was the female. waiting for the next low pressure outside :foggie:

Hopefully you will get another chance this winter :) I have a feeling I won`t get another chance unntil next winter. Hopefully I am wrong.

Today I decided to catch and photograph one of the youngsters with my new camera. It measures only 27mm tl.

27mm is pretty decent size, I'd say - they aren't particularly old, are they?

Are you sending photos to Jools for inclusion in the Cat-eLog, by the way [or are you going to write an article or some such first?]

I am sending pictures in bulks every few months. Its been a while since the last bulk.

There will be an article, and this is the first internet site it will be published. I don`t wan`t to say anything about where it will be printed first, before it is actually printed. Things have to be done in a certain order.

There has been a low pressure with high gusty winds the last couple of days. Before that there was heavy rain.

I am mentioning this because I think the male is up to something again. It is difficult to decide to steal the eggs or not. I would really like to see them flock breed without intervention as I do in my Hypancistrus zebra tanks. The method is both easy and beautiful. Also losses are smaller when the male continuously tumbles the eggs with his mouth.

I took out a clutch of around 35 eggs. Last time I did this another female laid her eggs a few days later. Maybe this will happen again. Yeah.. I am a bit greedy :twisted:

I really should, but it really hurts when whole batches are lost. At the moment I agree, but when the time comes I might change my mind. Especially if artificial hatching works better this time.

All the lights above the tank are turned off. I have added half a dose of Akryflawina to the main tank. The eggs are in a breeder box in the main tank. I have not bothered to use an airlift, since there is plenty of circulation from the power heads with air diffusers. I will feed the fish in the main tank sparingly the next few days to keep bacteria levels low. I will also do minute water changes daily to keep ph steady.

One question thought....I think i 've heard that Akryflawina can make fish infertile.Are you/or others familiar with this?

I have never heard that, and I hope it is not so. That would be a tragedy. I will have to do some googling on the issue.

I am glad I only used one bottle for 300 liters. My tank is 720 liters, so it was around half dose netto. Maybe I should remove it at once with charcoal? What do you guys think?

Edit: I have added charcoal to remove all Akryflawina.

Should I add something else tomorrow? All eggs are fertilized and healthy at the moment.

I don't know how sensitive Hemi-Eggs are, but from my experience with the extra sensitive L183 F0 eggs i only put snails in order to do the job...

p.s.I always keep the eggs in the main tank :thumbsup:

Thanks:) I have never managed to breed sp. 3 successfully.

I am using snails as last time. Yesterday I had one loss. Today I lost 4 eggs, and my attempts to clean out the dead stuff resulted in 3 premature hatchlings due to my unstaedy hand. Two of these had visible damage and were discarded. One of them is without visible damage and will be kept as an experiment. I assume it will die during the night, but I won`t discard it unntil it shows signs of illness.

The above were my losses the last couple of days. I just counted 27 perfectly healthy eggs. They will hatch tomorrow I think. Unfortunately I need to take a trip to Eastern Norway Thursday-Friday to pick up 10 large Baryancistrus sp. L177 (Iriri Nuggets). I expect significant losses from the hatching process as last time. There will be an update tomorrow evening.

Picture updates will be from the day they start eating, and following weeks, since there is a gap in my fry development documentation. This time I will not lose them into the main tank :)

Today 7 have hatched completely.
One of the hachlings had some kind of problem and was discarded. The one that hatched early yesterday died of course.
23 eggs have not hatched yet, but they are clean and healthy. Late this evening I will help the rest of the fry to escape their eggshells if nessesary.

Counting backwards I can conclude that the size of the latest batch of eggs was 38.

27 have hatched. About half of them hatched with the aid of a scalpel, fingers and a soft paintbrush.

once more congratulations to your new inhabitants. mine have not yes laid eggs since the last time. but at least i know now my female, and i guess i got a second one.

you wrote the KH is to low to measure...and conductivity measurements??

do you feed them special (like black mosquito larvae. i do that with ol the other catfish i breed)?? shrimps, other frozen food to get them ready to produce eggs??

I never tried the paintbrush, but I sure will... personally, I use a simple air pipe. I put the pipe into the water with my finger blocking the other side. The water can't come in... Then I place the entrance of the pipe very close to the egg and I "open" the other side, letting the air flow and the water come in, within the egg. Finally I softly push air in the pipe. This go in and out of the pipe is normaly sufficiant to help the fry to hatch without any problem or wound.

Of course, you have to adapt the size of your pipe to the eggs size...
