they grow very fast to about 20" and will eat anything that they think will fit in thier mouth,, my 8" planiceps ate a 6" brachyplatystoma juruense,, so be careful with what you put in the tank with him. the G.platynema is an awesome catfish,, but very sensitive. You have to be lucky to get one that is hardy. Question...how can one tell the diff between the two at only 3" body size (not including long tail filament)?
I have seen them both at even less than 2",, it is kind of tough for a novice,, but I can easily identify them,, the shape of the head gives u the best idea,, also when around 3 ...

what do you mean how ? like the water requirements and food ? I keep mine in a 360gal tank which is 4 feet wide and 6 feet long. water PH is 6.6 . Here are some pics of it:

no, the bent nose is not artificially made,, it is caused by the fish banging itself to the tank walls when it is first put in the tank from the wild,,,the fish is very nervous initially,,
