Broken links!?!?
OK, I've been putting this off for years but the cat-elog alone is now 10,000 files and growing. I need to rationalise a few things.
So, there will likely be broken links galore as I change things around. You'll notice that most generated pages will change to uppercase. This will allow me to greatly reduce the time taken to upload a new version of the catelog.
In the meantime, stick any issues along these lines in this post and I will look at the pronto. Should only take a few days of hassle.
Google will go nuts mind you.

I think an (un-)expected side-effect of this is that any OLD [1] reference to a Cat-eLog page is now broken - maybe there should be some sort of filter to translate old (lowercase) references to the new (uppercase) versions?
[1] Only when the page in the cat-elog is the URL of the page, I believe, whilst would still work. Unfortunately, a lot of posts are written with URL references rather than with clog tags.

I'd do that if it wasn't for the fact that the links will change again in the future.
190_F.PHP(thumbs & data page) will become synodontis_angelicus.php and
190_1.PHP(full image 1) will become synodontis_angelicus1.php
That's not taking into account anything that might happen even after that with clog2.
Bottom line is that the reason the clog function is there is to avoid this.

Hi,
I'm new (very new) and I've noticed that bit on the Web page that says
'Want to link to this page? Use this URL' on page:
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/ca ... /293_F.PHP
points to a page which doesn't exist.
ie:
http://www.planetcatfish.com/scripts/cl ... +schwartzi
In the light of what you've said above. Is this a known broken feature?
BTW, is there much point in placing a right-click pop-up warning about the viewing of copyright restrictions when this ability can be switched off in FireFox web browsers and anyone with a brain can get access to the image or data and if they're that way inclined copy it anyway?
These jpegs don't even contain any copyright warning in the jpeg's comment, EXIF or IPTC fields in any case.
Is one allowed to submit their own images of catfish which would be in the public domain? I've got some of my own.

I was just going to report the same bug as quatermass...
As to the submitting pictures, if you mail your pictures to Jools (webmaster at planetcatfish dot com), I'm sure he'll be happy to put them up, particularly if they are of fish that only have few pictures on them just now [or if they show something NEW, I suppose].
I beleive Jools is not able to separate pictures that are "publicly available" and "not available". If you want pictures to be available for downloading, I would suggest that you put them on a web-site that you have access to. I think Jools will be happy to put your web-site as a link below the image, where the credit for the picture goes.

Whilst on the subject of protecting pictures - EXIF information is easier to remove than text in the picture - Just load it into Photoshop and use the "Save for Web" [or whatever it's called]. This automatically removes the EXIF information. If you're familiar with Photoshop, you could even record an action that does this for a whole directory of images, if that's what you want. Removing text on the picture, unless you can crop the text out, is definitely more difficult.
I think what Jools is saying is that most people who steal images are doing so because they are UNAWARE of the photographers rights, rather than actually intentionally breaking copyright laws.
Of course, this is a complete tangent away from the original subject. I'll stop right now...

A method of doing this that doesn't require javascript and works across all browsers is to have the actual image be the background of a table cell, and put a tiled transparent gif in as the foreground for that cell. Anyone right clicking on the image would save the gif. However, the actual image could still be gotten at by examining the source of the page.Jools wrote:The right click restriction is in place becuase the majority of people who rip off our pictures for their own websites have less than half a brain. Re: Broken links!?!?
I'd like to do this but, AFAIK, this is impossible to code if you don't have the X&Y co-ordinates of the image? I'm also pretty sure it means some browsers won't print the image either and it may have an effect on PDFing the page too.Rusty wrote:A method of doing this that doesn't require javascript and works across all browsers is to have the actual image be the background of a table cell, and put a tiled transparent gif in as the foreground for that cell. Ah, I though I said elsewhere that I had canned that idea but it is replaced by XML!
See http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/xm ... ies.id.XML HOWEVER, there seems to be some problem rendering it.

when it should be

On the subject of Silurus previous post about Genus Thumbnails - may I suggest a BB-code extension similar to the clog-tag, such that we could like a genus instead of a particular specie...
I'm not sure how the tag would look, perhaps
I'm not sure how the tag would look, perhaps
Code: Select all
[cgenus]Pecoltia[/cgenus] would work. Other ideas welcome.
This would help generate translatable genus links, so that we don't loose the link to these when the Cat-eLog is transformed next time around.

If you click on the "All <specie> lnos" in the Cat-eLog, the page doesn't exist. for example: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/lo ... p/lnos.PHP
It should be:
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/lo ... p/LNOS.PHP
My guess is that this is easy to fix.
