Re: Proper stocking for my aquarium?

Suddenly I feel like a bad fish parent for keeping 5 full growns in a 55gal. Mine were happy, I had plenty of hiding spaces. They were happier in the 90 gallon, sure, but I had no problems in the 55.

Re: Can I have a jaguar catfish

And because you're asking for opinions, I say [insert feigned disdain] NO cichlids are good! Then again, I'm completely biased against the more aggressive fish. ;) I've heard decent things about Parrot Cichlids, so they're the only ones I don't completely turn my nose up to. (My friends and I have ...

Do you mean one of these?

If so, probably. The size looks to be about what one of my Raphs got to. He might like having someone to catfish pile with.

Case and point. ;)

You probably CAN have one, but do you really WANT one? And are you willing to upgrade if you managed to snag the one that does get super huge on accident?

So, you probably SHOULD not. ;)

Out of curiosity, what else are you looking at?

Re: Spotted Raphael and Small Fish

I never had any of my striped Raphaels go after smaller fish, but then, I keep to the fish mouth rule - If it CAN fit in the fish's mouth, it will eventually find its way there. They didn't really go after the ghost shrimp, either, when they were full grown. I can't comment on my spotteds, though ...

I am sorry to hear of your loss :( I lost 6 elder Raphaels to Velvet just a month before yours. If you wish to try again later, for ICH, I have had a lot of success with raising the temperature to 82°F/27.78°C and adding a bit of aquarium-safe salt - half dosed for the scaleless fish. My babies made ...

Re: Banjo cats for 20 gallon.

My experience with them mostly include almost buying them and going to Raphs instead. However, my LFS guru, Chris, manages a bunch of tanks for clients, and recommends a larger tank for them to be comfortable, especially in large groups. A 40 should be fine. If you feel like escaping the snow any ...

Re: Need some help with Raphael Cats

I never see my spotteds in day time. I concur with everyone who tells you not to worry about him. He probably even got himself stuck because you were messing with his hidey hole. As for your stripey, I would just watch him. He may pull through it. I've heard stories of large gaping wounds being ...

Re: Raphael and cory compatability

I kept them together for at least 3 years, maybe 4, up until the raphs all passed away. The corys are really fast swimmers, and my Raphs were never interested in anything but cuddling with them. I just added new baby raphs and still the same dynamic. They'll outgrow the corydoras for sure, but they ...

90 Gallon Tank Reboot

Some of you may have seen in the other forums that I upgraded my 55gallon to a 90gallon, but I was daft and used chain store fish for cyclers. They apparently carried velvet and wiped everyone but 2 corys out. I just wanted to share what the reboot looks like. :) No striped raphaels, yet, but I may ...

Re: Synodontis with dementia?

Not from dementia, no. Some of my older fish did that when they developed septicemia, though. I know it's been over 30 years, but you really might want to test your water if just for the nitrate content if nothing else. High nitrates can lead to septicemia. A plant or two can lower the nitrates over ...

Spotted grey Synodontis ID help

Hi guys! I just bought an orphaned spotted Synodontis from my LFS. S/he's about 7" long. Could be macropunctatus (hard to tell when the specimen image is preserved), nigrita (if it doesn't grow), ocellifer, or zambezensis, but I don't rightly have an idea. I'm not worried about the size too terribly ...

It took a few weeks for mine to show up. And even then, it was other fish, not my cats. The say quarantine for about a month. Good eye ;) He probably really wasn't feeling well. Shortly thereafter, my entire 90 gallon tank came down with velvet. Only he and one other cory survived my fully stocked tank. Re: L369 didn't travel well

For those reading this at a later date: Considering I just had to bury my 18" common pleco this past weekend after his skin sloughed off from what appeared to be a very mild case of velvet, I would warn against shrugging off plecos getting velvet just because it's "uncommon." He looked healthy minus ...

Nox-Ich was a bad, baaaaad idea. Even the half dose killed my clown loaches and stressed everybody out. Pretty sure that even adding the extra aerator didn't help prevent a couple of my Raphs from developing septicemia - probably from lack of oxygen. Emergency 50% water change and carbon filter ...

I hope they recovered! I had issues like this when my 55gal suffered a bout of Old Tank Syndrome and my nitrites spiked overnight - suddenly killing off half the tank. Make sure you are testing no2s in addition to the no3s. No2s prevent oxygen from getting into their bloodstream and into their ...
