You can keep 2 or 3 in a 55 -- I have, but IMO it's a bit cramped for them. I think a fish that can get to be a foot long rates more space than that. My 2 are in a 6' 125 now, but they tend to stick to an area most of the time, so I don't think a 90 would be to small.

Limas can be shy. Have some decorative elements that will allow them to camouflage themselves by pretending to be part of the plant life. Very neat how they do that. Only thing I'd caution about with Oscars is to watch the size differential. If O thinks he can swallow them, he'll certainly try. Once ...

If you've just had it for a couple of days I wouldn't worry much. Fish are often slow to eat when new. I have had not probs getting them to eat. Try feeding just before (or even after) lights out. Mine particularly like the Hikari sinking carnivore pellets, Tetramin sinking tablets, and any kind of ...

Well, I think it's safe to say that there's a pretty well established population in Zephyrhills, Florida. There were lots more that I left there.

Thanks

Catfish ID

Collected a couple of these from a ditch in Florida. Looking around on Fishbase, it looks a lot like a Callychthis Callychthis or Hoplosternum Littorale -- or are those one and the same? http://www.aquaria.info/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=33522&sid=3e2a44fc26de91b4474d15637dab1be2

I have a couple of S Limas in a 55, though not as large as yours. Have had no problems with tankmates so far, though things can change, and judgement is often more important than theory. Mine really like freeze-dried krill. They'll come to the top and compete when some of these are dropped in. Have ...

There are well established colonies of all sorts of alien fish and other wildlife in Florida. However, plecos are fairly easy to buy just about anywhere. It would be cool to have lots of different animals living here, but not necessarily a great idea. There's a colony of Monk Parrots in Brooklyn ...

I suggest Melafix. Might not need it, but it won't hurt, and works well with injuries.

Different algae-eater?

This one's new to me. Anyone familiar? Right hand side, lower middle of tank. Slate colored body, gold head and fins.

I'm not sure you need to go online to find your fish. Red-tails have become practically ubiquitous at lfs's around here. Even the chains. They really get huge, though...

S Lima does like company. Don't want to get in a quarrel with anyone, but the "puking" behavior is so commonly reported with this species that I'm not sure you should be too alarmed. You seem to have your water under control. Just stay alert.

First of all, the 5' length is exceedingly unlikely. Most sources I've read say just over 3', and though I have seen photos of large specimens, I haven't personally seen one approaching that length. This is of course still not a small fish, so you will eventually need to provide more space or a new ...

UPS is not the answer for this prob. These are only good for very short-term outages -- typically computers, so that the system is protected from momentary outages, and to give time to take it down in an orderly manner in case of a more protracted outage. Your only dependable alternative here is a ...

Well,"caveat emptor" may be a good policy, and advance research is admirable. If life were that straight and narrow there would no doubt be less stress in the world. I don't know anything about the practices of tropical fish selling & keeping in the UK, but over here there are few rules, and no ...

El Gordo has been getting quite a bit of abuse. Many points have been well made. However, a few somewhat rhetorical questions: 1. What is El Gordo (or Kmerrecorder, or anyone who buys one of these fish) to do when he/she/they discover that their large tank (I still have trouble adjusting to how ...
