Upgrading fry tank

Once more, a huge thanks to those who helped me hatch my first ever cory spawn.


I've got around 30 aeneus fry in a 2.5 gallon tank---they hatched on Thanksgiving, so under a month still. Growing like mad, eating baby brine shrimp, whiteworms, and crushed flakes, shrimp pellets, and Hikari algae wafers for variety. Their fry tank has a ton of java moss in it, as well as hornwort.

I need to upgrade them, I think, to a larger, wider tank. However, setting up a 10 gallon tank is not feasible, space wise.

I was wondering what the pros do in such a situation---I read somewhere about plastic shoeboxes, or sweaterboxes....I don't have much time to decide, so any help is appreciated!

I use the plastic totes all the time, and even built a central system with them to raise fry in. They're a lot easier to work with than drilling glass. However, back to your subject. There are 18 quart boxes sold at most discount stores which will work fine for a temporary home. Eventually, you will need to go to a 10 gallon or larger anyway though since they will be slightly crowded. If you're willing to do the extra daily maintenance you may be able to get them to a tradeable size in the tote though. It will just mean more work.

When it gets too crowded you could move into a 5.5 gallon tank. That will buy more time for you to figure out a permanentt solution.
