Angelfish and Catfishes

Post by Beersnob »

All,

I am contemplating in my new 20 gallon tank of getting an angelfish or two. My concern is what would happen to smaller catfish like corydoras, porthole catfish, pleckos, etc..

I have read that angelfish will eat other smaller fish, and I would appreciate not having corys and pleckos not becoming lunch (or dinner for that matter). This is currently a research item before I put any fish in the aquarium I'd like to know if there are specific species of freshwater angelfish that are less apt to eat the Catfish, or even species of catfish other than the large cats that would grow to the length of the 20 gallon tank.

Thanks,

& Happy Holidays (remember the real reason of Christmas!)

Have never seen or heard of angelfish killing or eating corys or plecos,it's possible as i've seen discus kill corys in the past(that was unexpected i can tell you) they eat neon size fish thats about all really.

A 20 gallon is small for angelfish long term is there a larger tank planned for the future?

Most fish won't bother cories once they have thier armour plating. To be safe...I'd keep bigger cories in with bigger angels. I have cories and at least 1 pleco in all my tanks. Helps with the maintenance :)

I do have a 46 gallon tank. In it currently are guppies, platys, sword, cories, porthole cat, clown loaches, blue mystus cat, and a Ghost cat. I wanted to start with a small angelfish and see how it worked out.

I am assuming that the Corydoras pygmaeus (pygmy cory) would be too small. I was contemplating getting a small flight of them. It intrigues me how a generally bottom dwelling family can have a species that prefers the mid-tank level.

Thanks,

Scott

I read a pretty good article this year on different cories in Aquarium Fish Mag. It stated that the number of cories is important to have at least 3 cories together.

As much as I love the Corys, I wanted to put them in with any tank I have and try some pleckos. It sounds like I should be safe from over hungry angelfish :P

Thanks,

Hi! Well, I have two black Angelfish, but I don't know what kind they are. They are 4 or 5 inches tall. I also have 7 catfish... dwarf, armored, and spotted. Along with a 3 or 4 inch long Iredescant(sp?) Shark. The angelfish don't bother any of the catfish, but my brother's Betta chases and annoys the angelfish.*heh* But, yeah. The angels don't bother the cats, or vice-versa.

Baku!
