Megalonema platycephalum

Post by Koltsix »

I was thinking about picking up 2-3 and the info. on them is pretty scarce. From the little that was available though I gathered that they prefer groups like many pims and I'd render a guess that their personality is probably pretty similar to Pimelodus Ornatus. My only question is what's their max size? In the Cat-E-Log it's reported to reach 7 inches(180 mm) while on Fishbase 12 inches(304 mm). I was wondering if anyone has had personal experience with them and could confirm both the max size and personality for me. I'm hoping that Fishbase is closer to correct in their estimate as I imagine the 12 inches they reported is the size of the individual they caught with the described stomach contents. Thanks in advance for any help.

As far as the sizing, fishbase has 30 cm TL which is 300 mm

Planet has 180 mm SL

TL is total length, the length from the tip of the snout to the end of the caudal fin

SL is standard length, from the tip of the snout to the base of the caudal fin

Considering the length of the caudal the measurements are not that far off.

This is stated in general comments on planet...The maximum size is a reasonable guess (the holotype is 126mm SL).

Both PC and fishbase have used different sources so there is likely a difference when comparing the two, we would gladly update this once we see or can confirm somehow the measurements from the paper used by fishbase.

I used to have one. It grew to abt 6.5inch TL and stuck there for a long time.

Mild fish but dont really hide much.

Thank you very much for the info. , I do often over look whether the description for size is using SL or TL. If I do get a couple I'll update the thread accordingly to give sizes as well as my own experiences with them.

Thanks a lot for the info. it's much appreciated. It's good to know that they're not big time hiders especially alone as I imagine any penchant for hiding might be increased when kept singly. I am surprised about the 6.5 TL I was hoping for not just a personality similar to Pimelodus Ornatus but the size to be similar as well. Still I could definitely see adding this to a comm. with smaller sized fish.
