Cochliodon

Post by FatCat »

Just picked up my new L077 yesterday :D Hes about 4.5 inches and just a beautiful fish. Very nice colors. Looking like he is going to make the underside of an elevated rock his home rather than the driftwood. Pretty good score for my area never seen one of these guys before.

O NO! Anybody have any reason to beleive that this guy would be prone to sucking holes into barbs? Have not seen this kind of wound before. The barb looks bad but seems to be carying on normally aside from the obvious. hope he pulls through.

If the catfish is a recent addition, it's not likely the culprit. Sounds more like a Mycobacterium infection (fish tuberculosus). Does it look like something punched a hole in the body of the fish?

BTW: Don't bother treating the tank with anything other than good husbandry. Antibiotics and such are ineffective against this.
Also, if you have scratches on your hands and arms, don't go reaching into the tank... You can catch it through broken skin, results in irritating and painfull boils on the hands and arms and is extremely difficult to treat in humans.

Sincerely,

Hi!

I keep 2 Hypostomus (Cochliodon has been sunk - check Taxa section) and theyve never attacked free swimming fishes...all they do is produce a LOT of sawdust...have to clean the tank every two or three days to keep it somehow clean...
cheers

Actually its not a hole in the context of a clean little hole. More like having no flesh on the side of my barbs belly, a little bigger than the size of an pencil eraser. Real rough and nasty looking wound. Definitely inflicted by something larger than a barb. I think that this is very possible because when the lights go out some of the barbs go sit in the corner on the bottom, or at the very top.
