Which ancistrus is this..
Which ancistrus is this..
This one was bought as Ancistrus sp L59.
What Ancistrus do you think this male is?
Looks fullgrown to me, about 15+ cm
But i can't see if the leading fin ray is rusty orange, which it is supposed to be..
He also have an injury to his head, can't figure out what that is,a big white spot. he is doing well otherwise. He eats and chase his woman away
He was however disinfected last week.

Silurus, does any orange on the fins point away from L183 and towards L59? I have four L183s that were bought as L59. As I slowly change their conditions to blackwater I'm seeing the odontoads change to orange. No spots as pictured above and in the Cat-e-log, but on the leading edges only. So it seems my fish match the written discripion of L59, but not the picture.
Here are two pictures, two different fish.

Pics of the female
She came out to play today, and let me take 2 pictures of her. Eyes = a match, but the female does not have any fine white spots on her body. There is also hint of orange on her fins,
Still a L059 ?
looking forward to your input

Re: Pics of the female
I have picture of similar Ancistrus. It was Ancistrus from one fish exhibition and the fish was labeled as "Ancistrus leucostictus".
These are other fish, they are from my friend - Ancistrus hoplogenys(?).

What kind of Ancistrus is it?

I think what's causing the confusion is that line in the discription about every leading edge showing rusty orange. The picture does not show this. It shows black leading edges with orange spots within the fins.
The first fish picture in this thread is showing the same stress coloration and pattern as my L183s. But also shows the orange spots within the fin, something my fish do not have. So I think that fish is the same as the one pictured as L59 in the cat-elog. But since the discription of L59 does not match the picture there may be a problem with one or the other. Of course that's hard for this novice to say, looking at only one picture of one fish. But my fish are developing those orange leading edges mentioned in the L59 discription. In every other aspect they seem to be L183, as IDed here when I first got them.
So I'm confuded. Whatever I have, they are hands down my favotite BN. I got them through a bad case of Ick (only my second outbreak in 2 years, both while in QT) and now have them set up in a 20L with tons of driftwood, tile caves and six Cardinal Tetras as dithers. It was only after I started moving them towards blackwater conditions that the orange odontoads started to appear.

Thanks Fish Soup
After the quaratine i will see to that they are given black water, it's going to be interresting to see if things develop as you said..would be great:)
At my LFS they said( if i am not mistaken) that L059 got the name Ancistrus leucostictus, but lost it for some reason...is this the case?
