Pale patch on Bronze Cory - paranoid newby?

Post by daven »

Hi,
Please bear with me - I'm a relative newby to fish keeping, and trying to learn what I can...

I have taken over an established tank in the last month, and one of the inhabitabts is a bronze cory.

Yesterday I noticed a new white mark on the top of the head, just in front of the dorsal fin.
The mark is broadly 'X' shape, and is not furry, or really testured in any way that is different from the rest of the fish.

From it's location I am wondering whether it is a scrape rather than an infection.

Can anyone take a look at <img src="http://www.savepic.com/freepicturehosti ... g=cory.jpg" border="0"> and see if they think I need to quarantine or medicate?

Many Thanks
Dave

Hi - a better picture of the mark - which is symetrical on both sides of the body.
I should also have added that the water quality seems to be fine - 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, around 15 Nitrate.
He is still feeding and behaving normally.

Without any further information, my guess would be that it's a scrape. I've always had an infection turn up as more of a reddish area. If you were really concerned, you could quarantine, provided that you have a cycled quarantine tank - otherwise, you risk doing harm to the fish in question by taking him out of a good water situation and putting him into a bad one... If I had the same situation, I'd monitor for any changes and keep the water quality up.

I've heard that cories are "talented" at wedging themselves into holes in ornaments and such - perhaps this is the result of such an encounter (?).

There are plenty of other folks here with WAY more knowledge than me, though, so you may get much better advice from them. :)

Thanks Jen,
I have a cycled quarantine tank, but it is currently in use for clown loaches that we bought last weekend.
We took on a Juwel Rio 180 with a bit of a mix of stock, including a solitary clown loach so are getting him some company.
I suspect from the sudden apperance of the mark, and the the fact that we have a few flower pot 'caves' (for an ancistrus and armoured shrimp) and bits of bogwood with holes, then it is a scrape.
We will continue to keep an eye on him, unless anyone recognises this as a fungal or bacterial condition, and as you suggest keep up the water changes.
Cheers
Dave
