fluorescent cory?

Lfs had a stock of fluorescent corys - never seen these before, can't find them on Planet Catfish - anyone have any info/latin name so I can look them up? - thanks

Probably Corydoras sp. cf. aeneus

These are probably the dye injected cories that hopefully will soon lose favour in the market, (although somehow I doubt it). This practice is not looked upon favourably by most serious aquarists and should, in my opinion, not be supported. Fish in general are beautiful creatures that need no help from us to "improve" their appearance. Breeding for traits, colours ect is one thing...but to subject these fish to injections of die? Anyhow, excuse the rant...this kind of stuff makes me very cynical.

Just to make sure there is no misunderstanding, the fish in the links above are not dyed.

The words 'fluorescent' and 'lazer' are names used in the trade for these fish.

there's a magazine over here in the u.k. try'n to get shop's to sign up to say they won't sell any dye injected fish. so if they are injected please don't buy them Metermaid

There's a Cory about half-way down the page. Or, they could be, as Dave said, Orange or Green stripe Aeneus. The dyed Aeneus I've seen are usually red near the rear and sides, like the one in the link. We can't say one way or another for you, since you are the first-person observer.

Dyed or injected Corydoras are almost always albino forms of C. aeneus and C.paleatus, and is very obvious at a sight.

according to Bronzefrys link, they are not dyed, but injected

Hi,

Just to let you know, beside corydoras, which could be dyed, there also are fluorescent cory or neon cory not dyed. They are very nice fish and various varieties exist in nature - orange striped, red striped and green striped.

I had the orange variety for about a year. They were so cute and very active during the day, unlike many other corydoras. They loved to seat on big leaves like little butterflies.

Unfortunately they are quite sensitive to water quality. They both died suddenly. I think maybe something was added to Toronto's water. I lost one then the second one after a few weeks. They looked perfect and no signs of disease.

I think this kind of fish comes from Peru.

They are occasionally available at some better pet stores in Toronto, but rather hard to get and very expensive.
