Nice little, uh, pekoltia or hypancistrus?

Post by gemjunkie »

I have to start off by saying, this little one was pretty stressed out when I took these pics, first day in his 'new tank' (temp housing here as you will see). Bear with me as I am not sure how to upload pics on here yet so it's links....

He's not quite as 'hairy' as my L038 but he is spiney to the touch. I did notice in some pictures of L236, they appear to be a little hairy as well...

Any way, more about the fish I have. He is very black and very white, except on is head, he's a slight off white color. He also has blue 'eyelids'.

I thought L199 but have another person saying no.... I don't know so I'm here asking... Any help would be appreciated.
TIA!!!

Hi Yann,

The entire back half of this fish has odontodes, like a Peckoltia. It's very visible when you're just looking at him, it just didn't show well in the pictures. I thought he was L199 also, and actually told her he looks just like L199 but should have to be Peckoltia if he's got that "fuzz". Is that incorrect?

Barbie,
Find out where he came from... Now I have one and would like to get him a girlfriend or 3..

You know, I was inspecting pictures of the L236 and noticed they have a somewhat 'furry' appearance. Especially in this pic you can see it... http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/lo ... /969_6.php

If you can find out where the person got him and if there is any way to get more, THAT would be GREAT! I've started asking around but so far no answers... Well, with the exception of one person, he's trying to help.

Any way... I'm about to start babbling so I'm off...

Thanks again for any and all info!!!

Many (not all) Hypancistrus species share these odontodes grow with Peckoltia but normally shorter, L199 dont have such visible odontodes grows at all on the body and look smoth in the skin...but I agree that this species really looks like a L199 anyway if looking on the pattern, head and the size of their eyes.

Hi!

Barbie!! My breeding males of my different Hypancistrus species are very very "hairy", way much than what is being seen here on this fish, they really have nothing to envy to Peckoltia... I shall look in my pictures if I can find one.... you will really be surprised...

Cheers

I have L46, L260, and L333 groups going now, and while the males are a bit bristley, they are nowhere close to the growth on this little dude, I promise! I completely trust that you are right, and I honestly thought he was an L199 to start with, I just thought he had too much growth to safely be called a Hypancistrus. It's nice to know what he is, so I can try to order her more though ;).
