food products without expiry date.

Post by kyo_k81 »

Hav been shopping around in a few lfs and noticed some of the reputable brands food's products ( Ocean Free, New Life Spectrum, Hai Feng...etc.) dun even have expiry or mfg. date printed on the container/packet.

Without expiry/mfg date for the guide, is really unable to tell how long have the products placed on the shelves.

Are these food REALLY safe for fishes consumption?

So bro/sis,care to share ur view, will u purchase a product without expiry date and is it safe to purchase those products?

FYI, Hikari and Tropical products have exp date printed on the product ltself

Dried fish-food is not exactly what I'd call "perishable".

I know that some of the products have "best before" dates on them, but I would think that any product in this market will be fine to feed to the fishes for about five to ten years after production.

Obviously, fresh and frozen product is a completely different thing.

Of course, the producer putting a date on the product is a good indication that they do care about the consumer using the product. It also gives a better chance of identifying the product that contains the arsenic that was accidentally put in instead of in the rat-poison where it was supposed to go ;-)

The other factor is that these products are well sealed in their shipping container. Once you've opened the container, it's a different story. The product is no longer sealed, and it would make sense for the producer to put a "Once opened, use within X months/years". Not that it's going to go off very rapidly, but it's obviously a factor to consider when buying large containers.

If the package of dried food has been opened, please make sure to store it in a cool, dry place. Or, it can become nasty! I bought a cheaper kind of freeze dried daphnia once. It went moldy very quickly. Make sure to look at it before you feed your fish. Some foods, like the Sweetwater Zooplankton need refrigeration after it's opened. I was surprised to see that plain old Flourish plant food needs to be refrigerated.....
