"Good" wafers and moving plans

Post by Bead Queen »

Howdy all!

I'm very much a catfish noob, and an aquarium noob, too, to be frank. I had a small 10 gallon most of my life with a few guppies, and really enjoyed it, but well - that's not saying much in terms of experience.

Hubby and I set up a 5 gallon for our son for Christmas, and we have been enjoying it so much. Its in our son's room, but we care for the fish. When an algae problem developed a few weeks ago, we decided to get a pleco. And now I'm hooked.

Having determined (thanks to the guys and gals? on the ID board) that we have a common pleco, we are planning to buy a larger tank for him this summer. He has the algae in the tank to eat (he's done a good job with the brown, doesn't seem to care for the green), algae wafers from Walmart, and I just started with grapes and cucumbers.

First - I wanted to ask - what are really good algae wafers? Can ya'll provide me with brands/links, etc? (I've been reading Shane's feeding page (and others))

Secondly - are there any catfish/sucker mouths that can make a happy home in a five gallon tank with five cardinal tetras and a bunch of plants? Are Ottos small enough? And would it be one, or would one be too lonely? I'm just wondering who can keep the tank spiffy when Mr. Plec gets a larger home, and I'm totally in love with catfish. Also - will my common pleco be compatible with other types of catfish when he gets his new tank?

Finally, can you talk to me about how fast my common pleco will grow? I did buy him not realizing how large he would grow, but I will absolutely take the best care and most responsible care of him that I can. Now - we are planning a cross-state move either next spring (2006) or the following spring (2007). So - I'd like to put off the really big tank till we're settled, if I can. But - I can see a 20 or 30 gallon as being not too hard to move if it is lightly stocked. Will that keep him comfortably for a year or two, or do we need to think bigger, sooner? Right now - he's just a little guy - 1.75".

Thank you all!
Erin
