L47 Breeding?

Post by Tristan »

Hi All,

Has anyone had any experience / or know of any resources where people have bred these fish. They are refered to as Magnum / mango or coffee & cream plecs - Has it been done in an aquarium before and what sort of requirements do they have?

Thanks

Tristan :)
Not enough tanks, does that sound familiar! L200, L082, L027, L118, L046, Discus & Malawis.

I think the biggest challenge in breeding L47 is that they get pretty big, 280mm SL. You probably need to get them to about 12-15cm before they are mature enough to show sex differences, and to make breeding successful, you may have to have more than one pair of these. So we're talking of keeping some 4-6 fishes are about 30 cm long. You'll need a pretty decent tank to begin with, about 100 gal (450 liter) or bigger.

But you're probably going to have an easier time breeding one of the smaller species, simply because they'll feel more comfortable (and thus more likely to breed) in a smaller environment.

Of course, if you have an outside pond, or a really big tank, you may be able to achieve this...

having said all that, I had a look around the Baryancistrus species, and the only one with a proper reference in the Cat-eLog for breeding, was the L003, which apparently grows to about 350mm in length, so I presume that it's possible to breed the L47 if you get the conditioning and trigger right.

Thanks for the advice- I am currently embarking on a Zebra plec breeding project - I have seven and am hopefully picking up 4 more on Wednesday so we shall see what happens. I love L47 plecs but, from what you are saying, i don't have the space at the moment - I'll stick with the zebbies
