Synodontis nigrita (pics!!) (also fishporn for PaulT) :)

Post by Caol_ila »

Hi!

I bought these 3 fellows today for 2 euro a piece.
The biggest is about 10 cm tl and theyve been swimming at the shop for about 4-5 months...in the lfs they were almost pitch black. I know nigrita is a dumpsite for these kind of Synos. Should i call them S.nigrita?
While i was at it i vented them...not real sure...but 3 females?

Until someone satisfactorily resolves the problem, yes.

UUUHHH OOHHH Fish Porn, goooood!!!
 :D

OK, so that's a little over the top! Appropriate, but over the top.

You have one male (first fish) and two females. You can actually sex the male fish from the second photo above.

See the little "thingie" (highly technical term BTW! :D ) between the anal and pelvic fins.

From the nose of the fish, the front orifice is the anus, the back orifice in the genital pore. Males have a semi-ridgid genital papillia with the spermatoduct at the back, toward the anal fin. Females have a structure(which is again clearly visible in your excellent photographs!) that is somewhat reminiscent of the labia in higher primates.
Sincerely,

Hi!

I thought about hybrid...but why would smb produce an "ugly" (for common aquarium owners i guess) fish that sells for 2 euros?

Well if we knew the answer to that we would be able to comprehend a lot of other peoples actions in the world.
Most hybrid fish are breed for eating, sports and looks, in this case all I can think of is there the ones that didn't turn out right.
Although another thought is these "Hybrids" seen a lot tamer and don't hide so much as wild or tank breed fish, they seem to lose there natrual behavior.

Btw i cant say that they are very tame or unshy right now...

If you meant the drawing accompanying the original description, no. These are the drawings from Poll, with the fish on the bottom being the holotype.

and it's easy to see those drawings are two different fish....

not just the pattern (this can vary), but look at the adipose for example!
no wonder 'nigrita' is kind of a 'wastebasket'-species.

Hi!

Franke or Sterba (ill have to check tomorrow and bring the drawings/pics online) writes that S.nigrita appears with 2 variants probably 2 destinct species, one of them having a longer adipose than the other...Sterbas drawing looks totally different from the ones in Poll...
Very interesting subject though

Hi!

Ive allowed myself to put these pics online (for semi-scientific purposes i hope thats allright)
Synodontis nigrita from Sterba Süsswasserfische der Welt (1958 i think) Looks very different to Poll imo
Image
also i found this fish in Franke - Handbuch der Welskunde labeled as Brachysynodontis batensoda...which it doesnt look like to me...
Image

Also i forgot that Erwin wrote in my greshoffi question that he thinks this fish looks like the Poll nigrita drawing...

Help :)

Post by tiegra »

Hello.

I'm new to the world of catfish other than the cory's.

I have an interesting fish but I'm not sure what "he" is. The drawing of the synodontis nigrita and the picture of the brachysyndontis batensoda posted by coal_ila look very much like mine. The only thing is he's brown and on the side fins and dorsal fin there are long "spikes." Although he does have the funny fin behind the dorsal like the others. I am trying to get some desent pic of him. Then I can post them.

The closest ones I could find where all under the synodontis. The bastiani, frontosus and schall are all very close. If he's not one of those. But what would a common name be?

He is a talking catfish. That's about all I know. Oh, and he's about 6 inches long.

Any help would be great.

Thank you,

Dani

unfortunately no. He doesn't have spots like that. Just really small spots that are not very visible.

Hi!

Just wanted to give some updated pics of these fish. Biggest has reached aprox 15 cm TL.
I think this is a female. One fish is much smaller than the others

I tried to set them up breeding but the cave/tank was too small and they just hid without feeling comfortable. Left fish is the 10 cm specimen. Notice the yellow teint of the female.
