Ick Medicines & Cory Fertility

Post by bronzefry »

Last winter, I bought some Boesemani Rainbows from a LFS who turned out to be less than reputable. My 29 gal.tank got Ick. This included 3 Paleatus and 3 Aeneus cories. They were at death's door. The peppered's were blinded with spots. The Aeneus would feint constantly. It was awful!

Much to my surprise, the cories lived and the rainbows(who seemed to get over it) died. It took 3 or 4 weeks, a lot of help from many kind folks, a lot of strong medicines and the sheer willpower of those cories to pull through. Given that they had so much Ick medicine over a number of weeks, I never expected them to breed. Well, guess what? I have five 2 week old Aeneus fry swimming around the 29 gallon tank! They are strong, feeding well, and reaching the top of the tank, then heading to the bottom to feed. :o

If that wasn't enough, a Paleatus female just laid her first batch of eggs. She was blinded with Ick spots. I'm waiting to see how her eggs do.

Has anybody given these kinds of medicines (Ick, etc.) and had normal breeding after? Does anybody know of instances where these Formalin/Victoria Green, etc. meds. do impair breeding?

I'd appreciate any input!

I overdosed on Tetra Blackwater and my Hastatus bred in that tank.... Seems like a change in water chemistry might have something to do with it....

Thanks, Zac. The more I observe, the more I would agree with you. The Ick really cleared up when I raised the water temps in slow increments and used the meds sparingly. I used them too much. I think the fish that died, died from formalin poisoning (sorry for getting off topic, Mr./Ms.Moderator!). One other tank got the Ick, but no where near as bad. I used the meds very little. The third tank didn't get it at all. I think keeping the water chemistry consistant really helped in the other 2 tanks.

Anyway, I have 2 paleatus babies! (I kept 5 eggs.) They're coming along nicely. The Aeneus babies are fearless and growing like crazy.

Zac,
It's now up to 3 fry! The Paleatus fry seem so photosensitive compared to the Aeneus fry. I wish the babies would hold still for photo ops.....I'm trying. I have the morning off. I'm going to see what I can do.
