Tetra Medica General Tonic - filter bacteria

Post by Corymad »

Hi all

Have posted earlier re what I now believe to be a bacterial problem with Cories. LFS advised me to use above med. 24 hours later, the one cory is improved BUT the tank is now showing a trace (and I mean a very small trace) of ammonia. Direction with meds is to leave in 7 days.

I don't want to do another water change unless essential (changed 20% before adding meds) Has anyone out there (UK probably) used the above product? Did you have any filter bacteria die? The instructions with the product don't warn of any filter problems nor does the Co internet site.

Thanks for any replies.

Hi Corymad

I used that produck quite some years ago, I don't think it is legal to sell or use here in Denmark anymore.

My expirience back then was taht is was very effective. I cured some fungus-looking disease with it, both in some tetras and a stock of livebearers.

In the tetra's tank it was added directly, and we had horrible results. We used the exact labelled dose, and all plants died (only one species of plant, Ceratophyllum demersum). And yes, aftereffects were long lasting, before filter bacteria was up to its normal. Make sure to get some air in that water.

On following treatments, and treating the livebearers, i moved the fish out of the main tank to a small Q tank, where i added +50% dosis, bathed the fish for 30-60 minutes (aerate water heavily) then back to their home. This method was a great succes for me, all fish cured.
