It's updated by entering new data and then checked daily. Do you know the total before the L397 update Andrew?

...and, just for fun, I added up all the points on my 27 species, and got 1618 total. So perhaps this issue has been going on for a while? No idea, but fyi. Andy

Hi Andy,

I did the same thing and got the same result. 1618.

I then checked my own numbers and they also didn't add up, although the difference was small (10 points low). It's possible that I made a typo when gathering the numbers (since they don't all display in one place, I had to go to each page and look them up, then manually transcribe them), but I don't think so.

Cheers,
Eric

I've not fixed it, yet. But I have added some totals and layout changes to the list page. I think the issue is that there are two places the scores are calculated and they don't match.

One bug I notice after checking two profiles (my own and Zulan's):

The total points listed at the very bottom of a person's BLOG list page is ignoring or omitting exactly the number of points earned in whichever family is displayed last on the page.

Fixed that bug.

OK, so here is the blog point formula:

(no. images x 3) + no. spawns + points per field input (below) that pass basic tests.

Method: BLog score is re-calculated automatically, globally, daily. Individual BLog scores are updated immediately on save of latest info.

I had considered also adding a bonus or multiplier system for the first spawn of a species, and for dynamic data like "rareness". For example, x points (200?) if only one species spawned in that family, or y for in a particular genus. That "pot" of points then gets spread across others as they spawn species in that family.

Cheers!

No, it's the new algorithm (which is quite like the old one) which is in place. It replaced two other bits of code that did the calculations but slightly differently. If there's an entry that doesn't look like it's adding up correctly, let me know and I will check it out.

Hi Andy,

I guess 1254 that's the right total then. The ~1600 must have been from when it was totalling wrong. Your (and all other) totals are now calculated from a single place. I had a look at your BLog records, and they seem about right but do let me know if one of them looks off.

Hi Jools,

Thanks for the look under the hood, so to speak.

I don't see adult feeding here. Is feeding (type and frequency) for adults left out of points? I thought it got 1 point of you put in a food and how often you feed the fish, with additional foods not adding points.

Cheers, Eric

That, Eric, is why I wrote this out! :-) Let me have a look at it - I think that could be the, or one, discrepancy from old to new regime and may help with Andy's query too. Let me have a look.

What do you guys think about +x points per family and +y point for each genus?

I like it and, as the only person to be listed spawning Synodontis grandiops (I assume as other spawnings are all listed under S.multipunctatus), how about +z points for the only spawning in a species??? :d

One the one hand, I like it because I've spawned so many families. But I think the points per family idea undercuts what I perceive to be the value of the points... and that is to guide others to the most info when looking for blogs for a species.

So yeah, while I like the idea of awarding points for difficult spawns or new species/ genera, I think awarding points based on simply the number of families or genera is not as helpful. That said, I do like the idea of awarding bulk of points per genus/family IF those points get subdivided as more people spawn the same grouping.

Just my two cents...
Cheers, Eric

Either I'm not understanding the formulas, or the calculations aren't working. I tested this with my own BLOG data for . According to the display in the CLOG, I have 68 pts.
current point display.png
I took your formula shown above and made three assumptions:
  1. All pictures each count for 3 points, regardless of whether they're eggs or fry
  2. 1 pt per spawn aggregates original spawn and all subsequent reports, not simply the sum of subsequent spawns.
  3. a. For all other items, the character set =># means that if the field is complete, you receive # number of points (shown in blue highlights in the image below).
    • 3. b. My alternative way of thinking of this character set was if the field contains equal to or greater than # number of characters, then you'd get only 1 point for them (shown in yellow highlights in the image below).
Looking at my info for Dekeyseria picta, I'm missing only 3 fields (min_dgh, max_dgh and 6_month_sl), all indicated in orange highlights in the image below.
points test.png
If I add everything up with my first assumption for bullet 3, I get 75 points as shown in the picture below. If I add everything up using my alternative assumption for bullet 3 (only 1 point for all fields other than # pics and # spawns), I get 62 points.

Neither of those numbers match the "68" points shown in the CLOG for Dekeyseria picta, so something is acting funny.

Returning to this note about food, I think it used to count for 1 point total, no matter how many food entries you added.... or maybe it counted 1 per food up to some max limit and after that it capped... I don't know; I never figured that one out - I recall some instances where I added a second food and I got an extra point, but I also recall in some cases I had 4 or 5 different foods and the points didn't change. Either way, should it be 1 point or 2 (either per food or regardless of numbers of foods added in total)? On the one hand, each food entry is 2 bits of info, but on the other hand, since the person must select a frequency to go with each food or they can't submit, they can't just add a food without also picking the frequency, if I recall correctly so it seems equally fitting to be just 1 point.

Also, I presume your "'water'=>1" field refers to the open field labeled "Other water parameters." I might suggest this be worth 2 points or 3 points, just as are other open fields like "filtration", "furniture", "lighting", etc. People who fill in that free response box might be providing a lot of info, such as how much RO vs tapwater or rain water they use, how often a water change is performed, how big the WC is, what chemicals they add (dechlor, minerals, etc), or what their chemistry is like in terms of nitrates, etc.. To me, that would be more valuable than 1 pt.

Again, just my 2 cents.

Cheers, Eric
