Corydoras loxozonus spawn

Post by bekateen »

Hi All,

On April 2 (16 days ago), I picked up 6 adult at a COAST fish club auction. The fish were not for me, nor for my Corydoras venom research, but rather I got them for a friend back home who had a few juveniles and I knew he wanted more. I've been holding the fish for the last 2 weeks while he moves some fish around in his fish room to make a better space. In my care, the six fish are in a 10 gallon tank with a sponge filter, spawning mop, thin sand substrate and a heater set to 77F. The fish are fed frozen blood worms every day, with a day skipped occasionally at random and they aren't fed on weekends unless I go to work (the tank is at work).

Today I collected my first eggs. Six eggs: 3 on the spawning mop, 2 on the sand, and 1 inside a suction cup of the heater (the suction cup obviously was not sticking to the glass wall).

I moved the eggs to a Fluval hang-on breeder box with two alder cones and some oak leaves. I hope they hatch.

Cheers,
Eric

Before going home last night, I did another 75% WC, fed the fish frozen bloodworms and added a second spawning mop, a yellow, pink and white mop.

Today I found a solitary egg attached to one of the light colored mop strands, near the bottom edge of the strand.

I suppose there could have been more spawning activity overnight with just one egg coming out, but more than likely I think this was a leftover egg from yesterday's spawn that caught on the mop.

Cheers,
Eric

Congratulations and very impressive Eric that you spawn a sp of cory this quickly. You certainly have the Catfish "wet thumb"!
Will be interested to see how the fry do.
Too Many Tanks... Too Many fish... not enough time!!!

P.S., Corys are fickle. The fastest cory spawn I've ever had was from , which spawned in a QT tank at midnight on the eve I brought them home from the pet store... But I've read even more extreme stories, such as one where the corys actually spawned IN THE BAG on the way home from the pet store.

If there's anything God teaches us about corys, it's that nothing comes between two corys and egg-laying when raging hormones are involved. =)) =))

Cheers, Eric

Good luck raising the fry Eric, it was 6 years after buying my group as adults before I got a spawn, there isn't a mop in the tank though! I've had them for ~7.5 years now, so I'd guess they are a year older than that and still going strong!

I had lots of eggs, I estimated 60, but they all fungused pretty quickly, I didn't make any special effort to raise them though.

It'll be interesting to see how you do with these, good luck!
