Please help identify my new cory

Post by YFS »

Hi everyone,
I got a lone cory at my club's fish swap and I'm keen to identify this new one so I can get them a school of their own. I'm a novice to corys and this isn't one I recognize (I presently have schools of sterbai, aeneus, and paleatus). One club member suggested this one might be a Corydoras sodalis; I'm wondering if it might be a Corydoras melanistius, assuming the faded color look isn't due to stress (as I just got them home and into a quarantine tank). Thanks for any help Id'ing them so they can have a school they're most comfortable with, eg 5+ more of the same type. I'm attaching two pictures. Thanks again!

UPDATE: Hi everyone,
Thanks much for your help. A few days have passed and here are 4 new pictures! The cory's color has indeed improved! (I hadn't realized as a novice fish keeper how much this could change). I hope these pictures work for identification (I hadn't wanted to catch the new cory and put them in a breeder box again so this is my cell phone at its best with the cory loose in the tank and an overhead light strip and daylight lighting). I know there's a cory with a smudge on its tail (C. similis), but I haven't seen a smudge in the middle of the body before so I'm curious what you all think. Thanks again for help. - Yaari

Welcome to Planetcatfish!

Both pics show fish with faded colors. They need to relax and brighten up for better ID. Second photo is probably . First photo looks like a different species (although maybe it's the camera angle), probably a lineage 9 cory.

Better pics please, if you can get them.

Cheers, Eric

Thanks! I'll give it a day or so and do another photo shoot. :) The cory is brightening up already.

The OP read to me as two pics of a single fish?

Then it is the camera angle and I'll stick with a washed out C. sodalis.

Thanks Dave.
