Which type of parotocinclus do I have?

Post by Sowah »

They were sold to me as LDA25 (Parotocinclus Jumbo) and they come in 2 colours (one is darker, another is lighter). However, the head actually looks a bit flatter and pointier than the LDA25 I saw online.
They are around 3cm in length and with the presence of adipose fin
Can anyone please help to ID? Thanks for the help!!

Was wondering perhaps P. Britskii based on the blotch pattern, dots on the caudal fin, and the way the saddle marking bleeds into the base of the dorsal fin.

It doesn’t quite look like it from the pattern, could be p. Briskii

The pattern is one thing, but not always a great ID factor for this genus, I wonder also how many Parotocinclus are exported out of Suriname to Hong Kong? My suggestion could well be wrong, but don't think it's P. britski unless a new export route has opened up.

I was thinking about P. Britskii.

Hi,

if these were sold as P. jumbo I would rather expect to have a by-catch of this species from north-eastern Brazil.
I do agree that it is not P. sp. "Pernambuco" but IMHO (I have kept that species for some years) it is also not P. britskii although body shape and colouration is much closer.
P. britskii do have a slightly different blotch pattern and you will never find this species by chance in the pet trade. Imports from Suriname are rare and expensive. There is only one scientifically described species of Hypoptopomatinae in Suriname, P. britskii (however, there are minimum two undecribed ones, one Parotocinclus and one putative Curculionichthys species from remote areas of Suriname).
If there would ever be an export of P. britskii from Suriname (not very probable) this would be for sure sold under the correct name for a very high price.

Best regards,
Karsten
