L056 Yellow Chubby Pleco (Parancistrus aurantiacus) sexing
I just got a big group of yellow chubby plecos. Some are pretty large almost 10"!
Anyone know if this bigger one is a male or female?
Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure how hairy females are, but I'd bet the pectoral odontodes place that fish squarely in the "male" category.
Hopefully someone else can confirm.
Good luck,
Eric

Thanks so much and excellent information I really appreciate the messages!
I'm starting to think all the fish are males. I'm wondering if the exporters keep the females?

Seems almost all the fish have the hairs on the pectoral fins. This smaller all black one seems to be a possible female!

Do male and female Chubbies all have the hair on the gills but the females have completely smooth with no hair on the pectoral fins?
Can a female have a little hair on the pectoral fins and what inch range do they become sexable?

This Chubby looks like a female since the pectoral fins are smooth!

Hi,
The females get a lot of bristles too.....so that is not a reliable way to sex them.
Instead, it is usually pretty obvious to sex them when viewed from above. The males have a wider head, the females heads are narrower and almost rounded. (looks like you got these from predatory fins, or you ARE predatory fins....! There are some pics of the "monsters" on that site, one of which is a female)

Hi bro so nice to get your message!
That's the greatest news!
Yes I picked them up from predatoryfins!
Is my first photo the female?

I think that first photo is a male. The more solid yellow one on their website, which i think was the third fish listed, is a female (IMHO).

Excellent! I'm noticing some have the more growths going down the tails than others.

Hi
Nothing to do with the topic, I'm sorry, but could we - as people who know what they are talking about - please stop calling this species wrong all the time?
Thats what I mean: www.ig-bssw.org/again-and-again-l-56/?lang=en

Thanks for the good information! It's very interesting to me.
I always seen it for sale that way for many years but what an excellent point to bring up.

Here is one posing for the camera. I'm thinking a female seems to have a smaller head!
Anyone can confirm?

What Repashy do you guys recommend the morning wood or the bottom scratcher?
They seem to be settling in well but not really eating much.

I mix a few together. A little morning wood, some meat pie and some of the veggie stuff (cant remember the name)....a little bottom scratcher too. I also use Xtreme Cat Scrapers and Hikari sinking carnivore pellets. The big ones take longer to come around to food.

Thanks so much! I just bought one of each! Sure seems that way with the big ones here being finicky the smaller one are already eating!

Re: L056 Yellow Chubby Pleco (Parancistrus aurantiacus) sexing
I know I am kind of reviving an old thread. But I am dying to know if you figured out a reliable way to sex chubbys? It seems like every LDA046 has odontodes and either there are no females availabke anywhere or that is not really a proper indicator. Hi I learned from Andrew the females have a wider head than the males. Seemed to be about right! I could see people bidding up the males and hanging on to females for breeding.
Acanthicus sorry for labeling the fish wrong I was going on the importer information
Those new wormline ones are very cool thinking of grabbing some myself!
