Need some in depth info

Post by JustMe »

Hi...I'm new to this forum. I was told to post my question here and since you guys know more about what I would like to ask.
This is in ref: to Cory's

1. Are they sensitive to any medicine?
2. salt?
3. substrate?
4. water parameters?
5. Anything you can tell me so I can be knowledgeable on keeping these guys.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi!
Welcome to the planet! I'll try to answer some of your questions;
1. I'm not very qualified to answer this, but has never heard about special problems here, like those problems Botias and other "bare-skinned" fishes might have with certain types of medicine. Maybe someone else has more info on this? :?:

2. They dont like salt, as they normally come from rather soft waters. But, C. aeneus is found in Trinidad, located off the s American coast. If it has been there since Trinidad did split away from the south American landmass, or if it have managed somehow to follow the strong flow of the Orinoco, that still affects the island, I do not know. But avoid salt!

3. They like a substrate without sharp gravel/sand. More rounded particles are preferable, as this prevents their barbels to be worn down. I have Corys in 2 tanks, and the ones in the Rio Negro tank, love hoovering in the rather fine white quarts sand, throwing it out of the lower part of the gill opening, to find food. A clean bottomsubstrate also help keeping their barbels healthy.

4. Waterparameters: This is really species dependent, but avoid alkaline waters of a ph higher than 8. Blackwater species like my C. adolfoi likes more acidic waters, and mine thrive at a ph of 5,5, and gh1. Everything from 6-7,5 or thereabouts should be fine. But, do a search in the forum, or the cat-e-log where you will find info.

5. They like some current in the water, and prefer living in groups of at least a few fishes (4--or more). They often live in shallow habitats, and like some treeroots and places where they can hide. They are not, as many think, scavengers, and like fresh nice food, as other fishes do. They like mosquiti larvae and other live/frozen food, and of course dry fish food as well. They have the ability to swallow air, to get more oxygen. In nature, you will often encounter them in small streams. They are distributed over a large area of tropical/sub-tropical south America. Some species are more active than others during night time.

Good luck with your fishes!
:D
