L201???

Post by pleco171182 »

Hello,

I have recently purchased this handsome little chap from my LFS (they had no idea what it was and sold it to me as a BN £8 :-$ )

Please could you help me identify it exactly, I have it in a 80L tank with an internal 1500 LPH filter with just rocks and bog wood to try and simulate the upper Orinoco... its like a washing machine! It is housed with one other fish, an L128.

My aim is to breed the L201 and one day the L128 ( i know the latter is v hard ) but first things first is to 110% make sure i get the right L number.

Any feedback from you lot would be greatly appreciated as I know there are some experts on here!

Many thanks in advance

David

Hi all,
You'll have to wait for some-one who knows what they are talking about for a proper answer, but with the large pectoral fins (I can only see the lower picture) it looks more like .

No, click on the link. The link is to a genus, not a species, so the one shown (L. triactis) is just an automatically generated example.

If it is a Leporacanthicus, it will be in the L. galaxias group.

Thanks Raccoll! I will try and upload some more pictures but you don't seem to be able to do it straight from an iPhone. What I have noticed is that it has very hairy pec fins? I understand males can generate these but this little chap is only 40mm-500mm long. Too be honest it's like no other plec ive seen before!

Some-one may well be able to tell from the photo, but you could get a definitive answer from a photo of its mouth.

Its quite important you know which fish it is because they have different diets.

(<http://www.planetcatfish.com/cotm/cotm. ... icle_id=67>) and (<http://www.planetcatfish.com/shanesworl ... cle_id=382>) have very different dentition.

Leporacanthicus teeth (from <http://www.auburn.edu/academic/science_ ... lepor.html>)

Baryancistrus teeth:

If it puts its fins out Baryancistrus also have a "enlarged, posterior membrane on the dorsal fin".

There is a very good picture in Ingo Seidels "Back to Nature: Guide to L numbers" <http://www.planetcatfish.com/books/book ... -Catfishes> it is well worth investing in a copy.

Thanks gents, so this is a L240?

I obviously got some confusing advice from my LFS! Luckily I have been giving it an omnivorous diet due to being tanked with my 2 L128s. He does tend to take a shine to bloodworm so I should of realised.
