You have the , as the head shape is rounded rather than triangular. I wrote a few articles on these (take a look at the cat-elog page for the Catfish of the Month).
Enjoy them, they are nice fish. Easy to breed. Buy more if you can.

No worries. It happenssorry about the double post.

Not sure I understand. What is random about the picture? This is a picture of the specific fish you are interested in buying? Or you just want to know about how to tell the two species apart?this fish isn't mine, i currently have standard type whiptails and looking to expand. this is just a random picture and wasn't sure.
Not sure what you mean here either. What is your aim exactly? You wish to deliberately create interspecific hybrids?can the 2 type breed together as thats my aim

Re: pseudohemiodon apithanos vs marbled
right, sorry, made a right mess of that post.
my aim is to gain a breeding group, dont want any cross breeding or anything. by "random picture" its a picture i found on the internet and this one seems pretty similar to both varieties, just the speckled cheeks separate them to my relatively untrained eye.

Yes, the "speckled cheeks" combined with a brownish base colour and a more rounded head shape indicate that it is the marbled species.and this one seems pretty similar to both varieties, just the speckled cheeks separate them to my relatively untrained eye.
