For me experience is my guide. Many would say the top one is male, when the truth is that it is a sexually mature female. The shape of the heads is entirely different, the male's will be wide and spade shaped. In fact I refer to mine as 'shovel heads'. The females have a shorter, rounder looking face.
The bodies will also be shaped differently as well. Males will be ice cream cone shaped, while females will be 'plumper' in the middle. I always say the girls have curves .
