I do agree it's annoying, but I really wouldn't get too cross about it. I can count on one hand the number of LFSs that have the expertise or the dedication to bother to ID their fish correctly. Nowadays it's easy with internet enable phones to check IDs on an impulse purchase.
It can work the other way too though---you can pick up expensive fish for dirt cheap if you're lucky.

Agree with racoll. If you can't identify a fish you are about to purchase, then you have no one to blame but yourself, especially a fish on the first page of the L-# number book! (this guy is formerly known as L-001). And with Planetcatfish, L-Welse.com, and other web based resources, not to mention books that were probably in your LFS while you were there shopping, it's hard to not know what fish you are buying.
Sorry to be a little harsh, but seriously? You won't be going back??

They are likely just selling it under the name their supplier sold it to them under. It happens, and unless the store is a specialist in plecos, they are just going to go with the info they were given.

What was the actual name it was sold as?
Did they literally say it was P. albomaculatus, or did they just use the common name 'orange spot plec'?

These are often sold as gold spot pleco, gold spot sailfin pleco or even marbled sailfin pleco. Don't think I've ever seen them sold under their scientific name.

Looks very much like a pterygophichthys Joselimaianus I have just brought a very small one put into my 4ft tank, they live for about 10-15 years.get about 12in . So when he or she get bigger will go into a 6ft tank.
