Re: Sexing L264
unfortunately both look kind of male since they have longer tail odonthodes.

Re: Sexing L264
really? That kinda stinks. I was hoping for a male/female pair but I guess I'll just have to work with it. It seems though that the first one is far more plump so to speak than the second one, although the tail odontodes are there on both. Also the first one seems more linear and broad to me or am i just seeing things?

Re: Sexing L264
Based on the shape of the head (as well as overall body shape), I'd say Fish 1 is female, and fish 2 is male. Not 100% sure, but pretty close to certain.

Re: Sexing L264
The one has guarded a cave a few times while i had them but i never really put too much effort to really breed or sex them. I hope you can get something good going with them.

Thanks Mats, I have had a hard time sexing these but mjlfish said he is almost positive that they are both males, one just has a larger appetite apparently!MatsP wrote:Based on the shape of the head (as well as overall body shape), I'd say Fish 1 is female, and fish 2 is male. Definitely a pair. Fish 1, female. Fish 2, male. Good luck. Try not to overfeed them.

Re: Sexing L264
Thanks tagamasid1023, I appreciate the input on the topic. Will do my best to keep them in tip top shape and just need to wait a few weeks for a huge storm to hit. Do they breed with pressure changes like other plecos do?tagamasid1023 wrote:Definitely a pair. Fish 1, female. Fish 2, male. Good luck. Try not to overfeed them.

Re: Sexing L264
Well from reading up on some breeding tactics, other used heavy water changes in sequence with storms because the fish I guess can sense the barometric changes in air, and it triggers them to spawn.tagamasid1023 wrote:Please be specific by what you mean of "pressure changes".

Re: Sexing L264
i know bettas react to that in terms of breeding. so maybe these will too.
you may want to get another female if you can. you for sure have a male among these two. try to get a 100% sure female.

Re: Sexing L264
What size caves do you guys think I should get? I was looking into some that are 2" diameter and 6" long. Tell me what you think or if there is anything better to use?
Re: Sexing L264
They look like a pair to me with the first being a female. They are very similar in shape to my L007 pair.

What size are they?

Re: Sexing L264
Also getting a cave from a friend tomorrow until I can afford some nicer ones from plecocaves.com. Heard they are very good and actually pretty cheap. Hopefully the male starts to cave like he did when with yayfish24.

Re: Sexing L264
Based on my experience, Leporas, regardless of sex, love to hide in caves. Wood or slate caves are fine, just try to position them in areas with less light. Good luck.

Re: Sexing L264
I was thinking about using driftwood to shadow caves for a more homey effect.
Re: Sexing L264
Actually had a chance to have my female out the tank, and I gotta say, ignore the hair on the tail. My girl has a little too. And I stand corrected, that fish 1 is a female. Been awhile since I actually looked at my girl. Like 2 years. Now just make em comfy and they will do the rest.
