A platitude for sure. I can see how presence or lack thereof of certain minerals in the water can have an effect on bony/odontode growth in fish. It is not unlike the presence or lack thereof of fluoride relative to tooth formation/development in humans.

Waterchemistry will have an influence. But keeping Panaque in hard water because this would enhance their ordontoles?

As far as is known (to put it mildly), they come from rivers with soft water, therefore I would assume that - whether they do use calcium in the water for growing them, they will not need much calcium in the water - as nature does not prvide much either.

I think the genital papillae look very similar in shape on these two fish (mine on top and Rob's below) but mine looks a little bigger in comparison :-p The ventral fins look similar in shape as well, both showing bulges, but mine seem to be longer and extend further down on the anal fin. What can anyone else see?

I came across these pics of a Panaque cf. armbrusteri 'araguaia', and thought whether this constitutes what a male's genital papillae would look like?

I'm curious. Besides the report in Amazonas on spawning , has anyone documented a spawning of other royal panaques, such as ?

Maybe, or maybe we don't have enough cookie monsters.

Or, as we say in the UK, they're a tough nut to crack and we don't have enough nuts keeping these things.

However, I am old enough to remember when just breeding plecos was an unbelievably tough cookie. We've made amazing progress in breeding plecos in just 25 years.

Oops, yeah, I got my idiom wrong. I meant "tough nut to crack" but I mixed that up with "tough cookie." LOL

And I hope I didn't raise expectations of a breakthrough on this. I was merely asking out of interest. Unless I can get royals to spawn in a 15 gal tank shared with a bunch of busy clown plecos, it isn't happening in my house anytime soon. :-D (see, that's supposed to be a joke since the 15 gal tank is so small)

pleco_breeder wrote:Likewise, the peristaltic contractions tends to point to male. This is only an observation I've made, but it seems the genitalia of females is usually too bulbous to be able to note if any movement is taking place. I see it in males of most plecos rather often, but don't recall ever noting it on a known female. I don't think it's sexually related, but something that seems to happen quite a bit.
I know this is an old thread, but I saw this post and thought I'd respond to it. Not long ago I recorded pulsations in the genital papillae of my female . The thread is here: Pulsatile activity in genital papilla of clown pleco (Panaqolus maccus)
