Ageneiosus sp(4)

is a male! I would have expected that the genital papilla/thickened front part of the anal fin would develop first, but it's the enlarged dorsal spine that gives him away.
Same goes for the A. cf atronasus btw.

Spinipterus sp otorongo are barely visible; I hope I still have 7 specimens left...

Same here Marc - since moving all the fish to the large tank, have not seen a single Spinipterus! They were really evident in the previous tank at feeding time, but sadly the move has changed that. The two Liosomadoras have also not been seen since being introduced though do hear them!

Any chance they were previously kept in a "quieter" tank (= without larger, more boisterous tankmates)?
I noticed they grew rather quickly at Wrasse's, but afaics he kept/keeps them in a species tank?
Thing is that the bottom area of my tank is still crawling with catfishes and sometimes I fear that the Spinipterus are simply too timid (= too late) to feed well - although their competitors are less in numbers and much smaller than at the time I kept "S. asci" (which did not work out very well).

The only addition are a pair of angels and a pair of red faced acaras, neither are overly boisterous, but I guess more so than the previous tank.

Krobia xinguensis or Laetacara dorsigera? I am keeping Krobias right now in the jag tank at my parents house. Have not noticed any issues with them (very timid cichlid sp IMO.)

The latter Nate, ie Laetacara dorsigera. They are very timid, though obviously at the front at feeding time.
They went in after the tank move and I didn't see the woodcats before either!

A couple of days ago I saw my largest male Spinipterus acsi fertilising the female (or at least trying to). She has been ripe for some time. He kept following her all the time, and she has been hiding from him behind the heater this last day or so. Last night I removed the other fish and just left the pair in the tank. This morning the female is much thinner but I can't see any eggs. I'm wondering if the male has eaten them. I had left him in thinking he might practice some form of brood care. Would you take him out next time? (if there is a next time)

I would really be surprised if the male (or female) had eaten them. As you know I only had males, but they never touched the eggs of T. intermedia or T. exilis (none of the auchenipterid species I kept at the time touched any eggs; the juvies are a different chapter).
So that's all I can help you with, unless you have Helena snails (aka assasin snails) in that tank as well, as these are very keen on fish eggs.
Or - come to think of it - any chance the eggs were sucked into your filter?

Thanks for the reply Marc.
There are no snails in the tank and the filter inlet is very small and flow is relatively weak.
Perhaps the female hasn't dropped them yet? She is wedged in behind the heater still and maybe it is squashing her belly down. I will keep an eye on them.

Definite male above. The other I'm not sure yet. It could be an immature male. The anal fin isn't developed but shows slight signs of doing so. I'm trying to compare the genital openings:

Anyway, my sincere compliments for this achievement.
I noticed two specimens (out of 7) the other day - merely because I changed the batteries and the bulb of my flashlight - and I reckon they haven't grown anything at all.....
And that is odd, as all my large swimming dustbins have found new places to live. I fear that - like my former Spinipterus - these are too shy for a rather crowded catfish community tank and therefore always the last to come out when being fed.

Thanks Marc. No, they are in a 4 foot tank with lots of other catfish, some very greedy. The male comes out a lot on a night to eat but the 'female' does seem to struggle to compete. I've just tried to measure 'her' again, 'she' is about 8cm TL not 9cm SL, but the male is at least 10cm TL.

Just to show you that I'm able to make as poor a picture - or worse - as Richard W. (congrats btw), here's what a male Ageneiosus sp 4 looks like.

Well there's not just one world first but another. Followed by wrasse's success with C. schultzi my Spinipterus acsi were thrashing about in the floating plant on Thursday night and today I have found loads of eggs on the substrate. Unfortunately the eggs don't look viable to me. See images below. In the 2 similar looking images you can see a heap of eggs in the middle of the picture, as well as a few at the side.

Brilliant! Some might be O.K. If there's plenty of plants in there I would expect a few to hatch and survive.

I have seen these infrequently during feeding & was slightly concerned that in the tank they would be out competed for food by tank mates ( aspidistras c118, guppies/endlers).

However after feeding Tetra FreshDelica bloodworms they appeared in a frenzy zooming round the substrate, grabbing mouthfuls of the gel & now look like they've eaten a marble!
