Auchenipterid availabiliy in the USA

Post by KungFish »

Does anyone know of any reputable online stores in the USA that have a good selection of Auchenipterid cats? Or should I just use Aquabid or Planet Catfish classifieds?

Besides the occasional decent fish store, Aquabid is the only place i ever see some cool woodcats popping up for sale.

I was afraid someone would say that. :( I'm not sure if I can order from aquabid, so I guess I'll just have to see if my LFS can get in some or maybe some .

Ordering fish online isn't so bad. You just have to know who you are ordering from. PlanetCatfish is a great place to meet people with fish that you may want. Your local fish club is another place. And of course your local fish store. Auchenipteridae are available on the lists. They just tend to be seasonal and limited in the number of species.

I do have both species you mentioned in your post. I do have two other species but they are newly acquired. We shall see, fingers crossed.

Jeff Rapps at http://www.tangledupincichlids.com has some wood cats occasionally. I got some Trachelyichthys exilis from him a few months ago.

There are a number of active posters here on PC who've used aquabid so it might be worth seeing who has ordered what from whom to gain confidence in particular sellers before prospective purchases
Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way.
Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!

I have ordered several times from Snookn21 on Aquabid. Good guy, easy to work with and shipped well. My Jaguar Cats were from several sources, but one of which was online place that I will not deal with again. I don't even think they are in business anymore. Stated the fish were 5" TL and for $60 each. I ordered 6 at the time and ended up with 5 fish @ 3".. not a good price at that size.

Alrighty. So Snookn21 is good. Now I just have to find out about Wetspot and Willamette_fish_hatchery. (WFH currently has a nice pair of Helogenes marmoratus that i'm slightly interested in)

I have had good results with The Wet spot as well. Never had them ship wood cats, but I did just have a bunch of L092's shipped on overnight shipping with great results. In the summer months I had htem ship me some dwarf pike cichlids, priority mail, and it arrived in 2 days and everyone was good again.
