Which Xingu species are being bred?

With the danger of repeating an already well discussed topic, I still feel a thread like this could have some relevance. We are all aware of the dam project in Rio Xingu, and the grim future this is likely to result in for the fish in the river.

I think it would be useful to know what Xingu species of Loricariidae are kept with the intention of breeding them in captivity. Many keep i.e. Golden Nuggets, but not many keep them with the intention of breeding them. I think those of us who are looking for certain species could benefit from a thread like this in the future.

Even though several of the species are collected and exported now, this may change sooner than we think. We can only hope the outcome will be less devastating than we fear, but in my opinion it's good to be prepared. If we want to maintain these species in our hobby, breeding them is necessary. So, I hope you will contribute to this thread by sharing what species of Xingu-based Loricariidae you breed. Also, your location is relevant.

Hopefully this thread is meaningful, and if not I'll be happy to use already existing threads if there are similar ones here on PC

I only keep and breed Hypancistrus at the moment. Did have the intention to breed with my L81 but sadly my almost fully grown male died last year. Still have a nice big female. maybe I will raise some more L81 to try an attempt in a couple of years from now.

Fish from the Xingu river which I have and breed:
- L173
- L174
- L46

And a friend of mine has a group of L82 which are starting to show signs of spawning, trapping in caves, no eggs yet. So that would be an interesting species to hold on to and spawn from the Xingu river!

Zebra plecos. I have gotten about 50 spawns from the colony between 2006 and late 2010. I have heard back from two people that they have gotten F2s from my F1s which originate from a wild group of 13. My current take is there are now enough folks throughout the world spawning these fish to prevent them becoming extinct on the planet even should they become extinct in the wild (which I expect to happen).

I have The 173b from Glaser but do not want to open a can of worms with the designation since they have not spawned yet. I also have F2 fish from your mention of them in Jools post which I PM'd you about (the ones hand picked by Hans), but they are too small to spawn as of now. They may or may not be L236 as we all know.

Good stuff, folks I'm part of a team-effort (sharing facilities). Currently we are breeding H.zebra and Hypancistrus sp."L236 Glaser", but we have set-ups (conditioning for breeding, raising juveniles) for Hypancistrus sp.L174, Hypancistrus sp.L066, Ancistrinae sp.L082 (which H.Støre Andresen still breeds in a different part of Norway), Leporacanthicus heterodon and Ancistrus ranunculus L034. L174 is bred in good numbers by a friend of mine elsewhere in Norway.

Baryancistrus xanthellus (not breeding sized yet, but growing)
Hypancistrus sp. L174 (acquiring a group of F1 fry hopefully)
Hypancistrus sp. L333 (two types)
Hypancistrus sp. L399 (spawning now)
Hypancistrus sp. L400 (spawning now)
Hypancistrus zebra (two groups, many spawns, but few lately)
Leporacanthicus heterodon (group of 7, in condition, but no spawns to date)
Scobinancistrus aureatus (3 over 14", probably all females, with my luck)

Hopefully I will be somewhat successful with the ones that have been stubborn so far ;).

Current stock/situation with young of different sizes only from hypan xingu species.
L333 (One pair, many young kept)
L066 (One pair , and due to shift these on somewhere else)
L174 (2 Pair ,few young left)
L173 (The hardest to breed so far for me, again 2 pair and more young kept)
L46 (6 pair left , and many young kept again )

I want to try a couple of pair of L236 but due to unknown type/confirmation situation i havent/not keen on purchasing any yet from Glaser ,as ive other L-numbers that wasnt what they were meant to be when ordered/imported.

If you register breeding events, it will show up on species and list pages AND on the link to the right of each post. If I can make that information more readily viewable, let me know. Maybe I could do something like a hover over tooltop of all the species someone is breeding.

I'd say the only Volta Grande species which is being bred in captivity in sufficient numbers that it is "safe" even if the wild population is wiped out, is Hypancistrus zebra.

I've got 4 x Scobinancistrus aureatus which I hope to breed in around 5yrs time, although I'm also aware I might have to give them up for the greater good (required tank size to breed and others probably having more experience at breeding large plecs).

11 years later and a new kid on the block.

I have realized the same as Håkon has (all be it a few years later) species endemic to the Volta grande do Xingu and surounding areas are in grave danger. In the formal description of L082 -

Scobinancistrus raonii

it’s included a picture showing how the riverbed has been covered with silt. This should show the serious issues that are developing in the area.
