Slate Caves -- Online Source? Red Slate Safe?

Post by elephant »

Anyone have a good source for buying slate pleco caves online (especially based in the US?) Or are there members on here who sell them currently?

I am looking for rectangular caves with removable lids. Also, I wasn't sure if red slate is safe for aquariums, or if the iron content (?) makes it unsafe. Maybe it seems strange to want the orangeish/red color, but the substrate I'm planning on using is an orange/red/brown that would look nice with more earthy tones than grey slate...

I apologize if this has been covered before -- tried a search & didn't find much about the color.

Thanks!

I have purchased gray caves from this source on Aquabid and the fish like them.

I have never heard of problems with red slate

I've never used slate, but I got most of mine from Brantley at www.plecocaves.com and my plecos really like them.

As for red slate, that's just the oxidation state of the bound iron when the sediment was deposited, so I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Hey guys, I'm starting to make slate caves this week. I have a limited amount of red slate or plenty of "regular" slate. I can make any shape size that you need. Some people prefer slate to ceramic. I'm making them per order right now, but hope to have some regular stock items soon.

Thanks!\
