LFS are horrible - Best Supplier Southeast US??

Post by StraightAddicted »

My Local Fish Stores Are Horrible, bad tanks, poor care, unreasonable pricing... Only other thing are is a Petsmart which is okay but people their lack knowledge... I live in Alabama, so I'm gonna bet my money on a supplier out of Florida. Just wanted to know if anyone has similar problem and would suggest responsible, great fish suppliers, that also have some rarity L's.

Thank Everyone For Their Input

It's no better here in Auburn, although at least we're close to Atlanta. I've purchased nearly all of my current fish online.

Yes, this state lacks some LFS Love... I did go to the Georgia Aquarium for the first time recently absolutely a must for any aquatic lover. What website(s) would you recommend that you have used. Ive heard about aquabid, which I do like the fact that I could possibly get exactly what I wanted but scared of what I would receive. I understand that I am more likely to get some fish that received TLC from their owner, rather than a processing center. But then I dont trust someone that has decent reviews on their.
Thanks for the Help Suckermouth

I have bought many fish off of AB. I would say many, if not most, of the sellers are private sellers. I have also bought fish from fish suppliers, and while most of my experiences have been positive, there are a couple that I would avoid. PM me if you would like my opinions, I'm not gonna air them here. You can also check other forums, as most of them have classifieds where people are always selling (and looking to buy) their goods. Any other questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck.

I have no idea about Alabama, but there are soem decent ones in Texas - yes, I know, I could drive to the most remote Fish shop in England, and then to the furtherest in the other direction and back again before you get from anywhere in Alabama to Texas. And just to make you extra jealous, it's 40 minutes WALK to Wholesale tropicals... ;)

I think LFS's are finding it hard to compete with the internet and the Megachains like Petco. Kinda sad. Check your local fish clubs, alot of members are breeders.

I've generally had good experience purchasing loricariids on Aquabid. Just be sure to keep on top of who you're buying from and make sure everything is right. Furthermore, about half the time it takes an extra day for the fish to ship down here, it seems shipments don't always come in overnight even with overnight shipping.

Thanks for the input everyone,

Mats, Im jealous lol... you should just steal some fish and send them my way :d

Plecoboy, I have looked for local clubs, there are only a guppy and pond club in this state that I could find on the internet.

Suckermouth, I will have to check for some on AB and look into that Snookn21 that you preferred yayfish24.

I've done great business with Snook and also Wetspot.

I can second the motion on the Wet Spot, I live 2 hours from Portland, so a visit to the shop is a special treat!!
They have a lot of really cool fish and outstanding service.( Anthony is the guy who deals with Aquabid and the online sales; he is very nice to deal with) I have also purchased Corys from Snookn21(John)and have had great service.

You might want to check out http://www.aquascapeonline.com/. I've stopped in to their facility a few times and I bought a small group of L numbers from Pedro several years ago and was very pleased. Of course, I live within driving distance and was able to go and pick the fish I wanted out of his tanks. Every time I go, he has a lot of L numbers and the majority of them are in good condition.
