WTB Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède

Post by kitty2234 »

Hi Friends,

I am very new here. I have been looking to find more of these catfish. I am hoping to breed them. I need males and females. I am willing to buy them at any size. I can pickup if with 100 miles of Jamestown, NY. OR I am willing to pay for shipping. I will have the money to buy them in about 1 month.

Hi Fish Friends,
:-H
I am still trying hard to fish several of this fish. I have found NONE, so far. I am planning to start calling wholesalers this week; in search of them.

Does anyone here know anyone selling them? (I did notice that noone here was breeding them.) /:) /:)

The only one or two I've ever seen have been contaminants with regular Pimelodus pictus.

Try to find someone that imports from Southern Brazil/Argentina, perhaps?

If you were in this country, I'd say Pier Aquatics, Rare Aquatics and those sort of shops would be your best bet - in other words, shops that import directly.

Here in the UK, they're not common as Mats points out. In my fishkeeping time i've seen them maybe half a dozen times in 30+ years and mostly single specimens apart from a pair once and a tank full of 2.5" juvies one time only.

Good luck on the hunt for them but be prepared as it may be a while to et a group and they'll not be the easiest fish to breed - how were you planning on going about it?

Welcome, Kitty. Although I do not know/recognize the qualifier Lacepede, I think I've had my eye on this pretty fish for a long time. I do not think I ever seen one in all my trips around the LFSs in western and central NY (I moved from Rochester NY to FL 1 year ago), CT, NJ, NC, FL. I bought a couple that I had thought could be it but they turned out an exceptionally well-spotted P. pictus and a P. blochii/albofasciatus/etc kind.

Furthermore, I do not think ID-ing this guy is necessarily easy. Too many look-alikes in that genus. For instance, see second pic for the maculatus in Cat-eLog - to my inexperienced eye, it looks close to what I call the blochii/albofasciatus/etc kind.

"Lacépède" is the original description author for the species. Like we could write Cordylancistrus santarosensis Tan & Armbruster. This is quite often used in scientific literature to make 100% sure everyone knows which species is referred to - it's only really necessary when there are multiple species that have the same name [either through multiple use of the name originally, or from splitting/merging/synonymisation]. But generally, the species name should be enough to determine which species is meant.

It's a bit like when talking about a place in the US, you add the state to make sure everyone knows that it's the same place, so instead of just saying "Jacksonville", you say "Jacksonville, Florida". Of course, when it comes to very familiar places, they don't usually need further clarification. Most people know Chicago, New York, Boston, etc.

Thanks, Mats, much.

Kitty, keep your hopes up and keep searching. I, for one, would dearly love to see someone find these cats, write about them, post pics, etc... and a successful breeding would be fantastic. The fact that you really wanna do it is in itself fantastic.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the support. My original plan was to duplicate their natural environment and to get some bigger tanks. The rumors say that they are found in colony swarms and that is when the natives catch them. I also was hoping to get my hands on a Rainstorm CD, that I hoped to place very close to the tank. I wanted the tank to FEEL the thundar, as I thought this might help.

I also need floating water plants like lilies, but am not sure if I can get any type of Real lily to grown in my tanks. I am planning to buy bigger tanks and have been researching a variety of possible breeding caves and logs.

I have found and am hoping to buy my first pair of breeding catfish, very soon. They look beautiful. I am pretty sure that they are L411?

I am working on making a fish room in the cellar and my bedroom is full of tanks. I am hoping to buy many, cheap, and large tanks. I am planning on starting a business in about a year, with hardly no money. I also am raising hundreds of sailfin mollies and I have just started cichlids.

There is an app for iphones and similar called "sleepmaker" which has all sorts of long playing rain/storm sounds but this is probably best accompanied by temperature drops, pH shift & the physical sensation of rain simulated by a watering can effect/spraybar...

Hi Richard,

Thanks for adding a few more ideas to the mix. I don't have any of those blackberry type machines and I don't think that I want one of them. I am happy with old fashioned things.

I don't think that finding the music will be too hard. I will look into a spray maker. I know several ways to drop the temperature. I also heard that some Leaves are used to change the PH of water. I already use driftwood in almost all of my tanks.

I found an exporter in Peru, South America. He says that my fish is found in Argentia and he will look for it. He would prefer me to buy 100 kilos(?) - weight of fish and water. I will also start checking into an importer for me to use.

The exported found a very KOOLLL looking Cory Cat. He called it neon or (glow in the dark). It looked very neat and I will try to buy some of them later.

I am trying to buy some salt n pepper corys and some of the spitiz (I know that I spelled it wrong. I have been shopping for adult breeders on Aquabid.

Re: Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède - Found!

Hi Friends,

I have found a supplier in Argentia that can export my catfish. I will need to find a importer now. I also will need to have a group buy. The supplier wants to send a 6 box minimum. I asked them to send me more information and a price list.

As everyone thought, they are hard to come by. I didn't think it'd be that hard. Wow. What happened with the first deal: it sounded like you had found them right away?

If they only come as w/c, one may need to wait for the right season. Have you not found someone in the US who imported them before, know what they do, and can do it again??

Maybe you have already got a grasp on this...the ordering is fairly easy but make sure you fully understand all laws and rules for bringing fish into your country and state. Talk to others that do this regularly on the recieving end. Nothing worse than having your shipment sitting there but you can't touch it because of some legality. (that has not happened to me but I am sure it would be no fun) Crossborder can often be tricky into a country, there is a reason some specialize in this.

Hi Fish Friends,

Thanks for responding. I never heard back from the first possibly person that thought they could find the fish. I have found noone in the US, so far that has brought them in on purpose. I do know that sometimes they are misclassified as Spotted Pims and once in awhile some come in with them.

I am looking now for any US importers, since I have found 2 possible exporters. One of the importers has 200 Green Laser Cory Cats available for $9.00 each. He also sent me a complete list of possible costs. I might have to wait until I get some college money, to invest in buying some fish from him. The price for around 6 boxes of fish will be: around $400.00 and the price of the fish. Then, I would have to re-sell all of the extra fish! (I am so desparate that I am thinking of doing it).
