Better, but I think I'd find it somewhat annoying if I just missed one of the first headlines because I'd have to wait too long before it appears again.

On the other hand I do like the idea of being able to browse the lastest headlines here.

How about making the field static as it has been for some time and then introduce a scroll bar for that field alone so it's possible to view more than the most recent 5 or 6 headlines if you want to ?

Just hit refresh / reload!

That's a good idea. I will think about that and putting the thing in an iframe.

That would work, but not if I miss number 20 or an even later headline. I guess it's impossible to satisfy everybody...

I think it is good.
It will never satisfy everyones requirements.
But i think it adds an element of dynamism to the page, captures interest, and will encourage more people to take a look.

It seems that Safari is the only browser it doesn't work in. Mozilla and Camino handle it fine (BTW HH, just noticed that Camino's nightly builds are looking good).

I'd rather have it static with a scroll bar so that I could scroll at my own pace, not have it rolling at whatever speed you set it to.

I tried the scroll bar and it was OK, but look a bit "clunky".

I think I'm going to go with the scroller and have a small link to a page that show the topics in full without the scrolling. Having movement on the page is cool / attractive and will work in 99.8% of the browsers that have been used to view the site in the last month (I checked). The link will allow anyone who missed something (and I ask the question, how do you know you missed something if you missed it!), or missed clicking on something or doesn't use a browser that supports the marquee tag to view the topics as shown on the front page.

My 1 and a half sense:
Can you make it stop when your pointer is over it?
I have seen this on another board and then you can stop it at your pace an read the whole title and author etc.
Makes it easier to click too.

I use IE and have my screen resolution set to 1152x864 and can't read them because the text appears too small. Either way I don't mind going to the forum and hitting the view all new topics button.

Silurus,

That working now? Rusty put in a browser check for safari and if you're using that you get the static style otherwise you get the scroller.

This is going into production as is.

Changes can always be made. :-) Just we don't always make them. I have tweaked this a bit now so it now shows itself within an iframe tag. Various reasons for doing this not least that anyone can take the following HTML and use it anywhere on their site.

Code: Select all

<IFRAME SRC="http://www.planetcatfish.com/core/topicsanywhere_iframe.php" height="200" WIDTH="500" name="iframe" SCROLLING="NO" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" FRAMEBORDER="0"></iframe>

I've experienced a slight problem with the new scrolling list of recent postings. It seems like it sometimes starts too early. If for one reason or another the page takes some time to load, I end up in the middle of the list - I don't get to see the first of them.
