Searching confirmed grandiops and multipunctata breedings

Post by Oliver D. »

Hi,

i´am planning a report for a german aquarium magazine.
Who have confirmed S. grandiops(seven pectoral-fin rays) or S. multipunctata(eight pectoral-fin rays) and have breed them with, or without host? I hope we can get together an overview wich species breed with host and wich breed without host. Or both with and without host... :))
I think it could be very interesting for every one here who keep one of these species.

I think i have fry from S. grandiops without host. I have not seen the breeding directly but they was in the mood and i have found eggs behind the filter. In a few days i can say it sure...

Thanks in advance!
Best regards, Oliver

I have had fry from confirmed with host...I am not surprised to hear of S. grandiops breeding without host also.

I have been regularly breeding S. grandiops for almost 2 decades now with the list of hosts up to about 15 different species. When they were purchased they were sold to me as S. multipunctatus, but have confirmed in the recent past that they are grandiops.

Please list the hosts you have used.

And an older video from the feeding:

Hello,
I'm relatively new at spawning egg scattering Synodontis, and have a couple questions about this spawn. I want to continue on with more difficult types to see what's possible, so I'm trying to get all the info I can before adding species. I spawned one of the mouthbrooding types about 15 years ago, but don't know which species it was and can't add to your information for that reason.

1. Was there any specific trigger used to get them to spawn?
2. How large, and old, are the adults.
3. Are there any other visible differences, aside from ray counts, between grandiops and multipunctatus that I could use to differentiate potential breeders?

I'm still learning, so please understand if the questions seem a bit basic.

Thanks,

Larry

Hi Larry,

No special triggers. Mosquito larvae and water changes are a good way to bred a lot of fishes.
2. How large, and old, are the adults.
The "adults" have only 8 cm. I´ve bought them one year ago with arround 4 cm.
3. Are there any other visible differences, aside from ray counts, between grandiops and multipunctatus that I could use to differentiate potential breeders?
Ray counting is the best way, i think.

I agree with Oliver...this is by far the best way and definite...multipunctatus are noticably larger as well but you won't always have full grown adults to compare, S. grandiops does have a proportionally larger eye but may take a practiced eye to discern.

I'm very surprised that you report that your breeders are 8 cm. long. That seems very small to me and my experience with that species.

Given that my understanding is that they grow rather quickly initially, wouldn't this imply that they should be breeding at, or less than, two years?

You mentioned that you found the eggs behind the filter. Is this mattenfilter, or am I not understanding?

I've began a search for juveniles or adults, and plan to try to replicate your results, but trying to figure an effective way of collecting eggs and still keeping them well fed. False bottom is obviously out since I don't want to dedicate more than one tank to adults right now and the sporadic spawning pattern really wouldn't work for a "blind date" approach.

Just to help out with the rest of the info, I'll also be trying the cuckoo method once I manage to find potential breeders. I doubt this will be in time for your presentation, but I'll share the results via the forum if anything ever comes of this project.

Thanks,

Larry
