Plecos with Hoplos?
Hey guys would you think I could get a group of hoplos say around 5 with a group of 6 L201 in 180 litre tank?
its 90cm by 40 surface area wise
Just wanting some thoughts because I was just thinking of branching out with catfish and if i cant keep them in there its all good!

Re: Plecos with Hoplos?
I would worry a little bit about feeding... Hoplos eat anything, and are not shy when it comes to going for food, and they can be quite greedy. I've never kept Hypancistrus L201, but I expect them to be much more shy than the hoplos.

I have never had these two fish in the same tank.
I have however kept larger L Numbers with ie .
I totally agree about the feeding, May I suggest keeping with L201 they are a far more dainty feeder and also do tend to be more mid water?
Megalechis thoracata are quite aggressive feeders when adults and if your lucky or unlucky depending on your point they will try to spawn and that gets quite exciting to say the least.
Water conditions and tank set up would to keep both Species need to be different in a few ways ie L201 like a soft substrate Megalechis thoracata will turn a soft substrate in to a constantly flying dust storm.
One thing to be said for all the more robust Callichthyidae is they do make wonderful clean up crews

Re: Plecos with Hoplos?
I have found that Hoplos are the life of the tank .They eat almost anything and get along with all my other fish.as a matter of fact yesterday I found one swimming around with an oto in it's mouth.I hope It croked on it's own.
I did have to change the bottom from sand to river rock because of the mess they made ,I also went away from live plants,I could not keep them in the ground.
Mine are wild caught and 5in and 6in long they move aroung a lot and need a large area to nose around in.
Enjoy the mess.

Re: Plecos with Hoplos?
I think you can still target feed the L201 by providing large chunks of veggie, shrimp and fish filet. these chunks will be far to large for the hoplo's to swallow whole.

Re: Plecos with Hoplos?
My hoplos love duckweed. They devour it so fast I have to ration their extra goodies.
I do have L201s but in a separate tank (they are rather shy) and bristlenose in with the hoplos. And the latter are very good at getting every bit of food they can!

But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I will be unique in all the world..... You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.
