Thanksgiving

Post by crkinney »

A long honored tradition in the USA .
It is said to have started when a group of starving settlers were befriended by a band of Indians. It is said that the Indians brought grains, squash, and Turkey to feed this mob.
First how many of you in other countries Have a like holiday?
Second can you figure out what we would be eating if those Indians had brought a mule to that feast instead of turkey? :d

Turkey here tomorrow and no small feat to get one. I paid US $75 for a 18 pound bird, Turkey not being exactly a staple east African food.

Ever wonder what to do with all that left over turkey after everyone has had their fill of turkey sandwiches?

Shred the rest of the bird and grate a big stack of cheese (Monterrey Jack if you can get it but any cheese you like will do). Fill tortillas (flour or corn) with turkey and cheese, wrap, and place in a glass baking dish one level deep. Pour two small cans of green chile sauce over the top and grate more cheese over the sauce. Cover and freeze.

In a couple of weeks pop it out of the freezer, defrost, bake in the oven, and enjoy your awesome feast of green chile turkey enchiladas.

It's just plain not observed in the UK, seen very much as an American affair. That said, those of us who have spent some time Stateside and count many Americans among our friends, do try to celebrate it.

It usually involves American things for us (us = my nuclear family) and is more about celebrating our ties than actually what Americans are meant to be celebrating. So, apple pie and hot dogs all round.

Meantime, as Shane has talked about Mexican food. Here's a local carryout called "McMex" which offers Mexican food with haggis in it. A haggis burrito is the bogs dollox - super tasty. http://www.bathgatebid.net/EB%20NEWS%20June2010.pdf and search for "mcmex" - they're not big on internet.

HAGGIS BURRITO! I was damn near on the next plane to Bathgate until I realized you all have that crazy "winter" thing going on up there. You know I contract ick below 75 degrees and the resultant methylene blue baths leave me looking like a smurf for two friggen weeks!
Regardless I will wash down a turkey, cranberry and Miracle Whip sandwich with a Tusker lager in McMex's honor.

PS Just realized you are currently in Dublin which makes my decision much more difficult... besides Scots are mostly blue anyway.

I am not too big on turkey, probably cause my mom made it constantly when we were growing up and my dad liked it cooked to death like everything else so blcchhh!! lol

I like the honeybaked hams and corn bread and carrots and mashed potatos and pies and stuff tho!

Where my sister lives in Santa Rosa they have wild turkeys all over, some are huge!!! They travel in packs! :-O

Also thanksgiving always reminds me of the Second Addams Family movie where the kids get sent away to camp and they do that play!! :))

Happy Turkey Days to all our United States friends!
Cranberry and stuffing sandwiches drooling in gravy....

We had our Thanksgiving a while ago but our Football season is ending on Sunday. No, not soccer and not US style football, it's the really fast version. Only in Canada do we occasionally have two football teams with the same name and we now have one owner with two teams. We're odd. The last game was played with a windchill of -26c (temp on thermometer was -16), snow on the field etc, what a hoot. So this Sunday, we celebrate the CFL Grey Cup and be thankful that our American friends are, well, our American Friends! Tailgate and beer for me.

Go, Riders, Go!

Anyone making beercan turkey? I just bought the little contraption that holds the turkey upright with the can in the middle, can't wait to try it.
Racing, shoes and fish. Nothing else matters. Oh, and bacon.

it is a real blessing to have friends to talk to about things so near and dear to us as our fish tanks and their catfish occupants.im sure many of you have wives, or husbands who could care less about these things which we are so passionate.my wife dosent know a doradid or loricariidid from fish and chips.she once called me at work at 10am,not long after my arrival there,to inform me of a striped fish thrashing about on our living room carpet.when it would have been much easier to pick up a net, scoop it up, and deposit it back in its tank.she even refuses to feed them, and calls our daughter over to do that little chore. however i am thankful that she even called at all as i instructed her to cover the big rafael with a luke warm towel, until i could brave freeway traffic for an hour after dissappearing from work to re-tank it myself.no my wife dosent give a flying fig about any fish unless its in a pan of 400 degree peanut oil, breaded, salt and peppered.when i come home with that rare plec, i tell her it cost 10 dollars.if its a bag of cories, they were 10 dollars.whatever is in that plastic bag, it was 10 dollars.get the picture? it keeps peace at home. now mind you i dont smoke or drink, have no other hobbies or vices, not even the occassional lottery ticket.meanwhile miz ann can spend time and money in walmart or macy's like she is hired to do the midnight shift there.i know what youre thinking, and no my wife dosent work.all im saying is that i thank god for time spent working on my fishtanks.and i thank god for my catfish friends at planet catfish.AT LEAST SOMEBODY UNDERSTANDS ME!! and that my friends is what thanksgiving means to me.happy thanksgiving!!!

I KNEW I had pics from somewhere. Here is our 2001 Thanksgiving food, ham roasted in coca cola and apple pie. Washed down with, as memory serves, Schlitz beer which is REALLY hard to get. Had to lie down in a cool dark room after that lot!
