Trachycorystes trachycorystes Compatibility

Hi, I recently picked up a Trachy, I have been after one for a while, It is around 6-7" and I have just seen it eat for the first time, I has eaten in my tanks but not when I was watching.

I wanted to know the Compatibility of them, He is on his own, I know they are predatory catfish, but I wanted to know if I could keep them with other predatory catfish, I can get my hands on another Trachy, same size, aswell as similar sized Liosomodoras oncinus, would these make good tank mates? Tank size, I have 2ft'ers to 6ft as I recently set up a fish house.

PS, their is bloodworm etc in the bucket as in the LFS, he looked a bit skinny so I asked to see him feed, he fed well so I took him and resulting in the stress of bagging and moving he throw up the blood worms. He now is eating, tetra prima, earthworm pellets and earthworms, I am going to add more to his diet, more meaty live foods, like crickets maybe?

That suggests large tankmates, I don't see why you should have any problems keeping Liosomadoras with it, though am not sure about keeping two together, even in a 6'er, but as I haven't kept one, I am not in a position to say what these are like.
There are five keepers of this fish, Marc van Arc states that he didn't keep it for long due to it's aggresive nature. Another keeper, grokefish, states it does like to eat crickets.
I'd like to see more pictures once it's in and settled, but definitely put it into the 6' - this fish will need a lot of swimming space, especially once it starts to exceed 12".

I would suggest you can keep them with anything EXCEPT other auchenipteridae.

I dont beleive them to be predetory in the percivorous way anyway.
I firmly believe they are insectivores that also eat fallen fruit.
I think they have been labelled as percicores because of their glancing similarity to ogre/gulper catfish.
I could be wrong.

Do not keep it with pims this is not good he will not get on.
Mine was happy enough with fish smaller than him and also got on with my panque and megladoras but did not get on with any pims and had mild barneys with the jags, but that was mostly them attacking him/her.

Yours is VERY skinny by the way.

I found tetra chichlid sticks, peas, crickets and I think it was dates were the key.

Yes I got him from Pier, their is another 1 left in stock, was skinny when I saw him but should fatten up like mine has.

Hi Grokefish, thanks for the link, I have seen it before! nice Trachy, shame you lost it. I would like to keep him with acouple jaguars, you said you have with mild fights, how mild, was it just over territory, I may just set up a Jaguar tank, I can get hold of some a good 6-7" nice sized fish.

I did say he was skinny, thats why I asked to see him feed, if you think this was skinny, the other was skinnier, but both feeding and healthy, I actually wanted the other aswell until people on this thread have said it was a bad idea. He is doing extremely well, he now comes out and eats infront of me, I have had him eat to date, tetra prima, hikari cichlid gold sinking, earthworm, earthworm pellets, hikari massivore pellets all taken greedily, he has put on weight and now has a belly on him! I will try and get a video, he is in a temporay 2ft tank for now until he eats steadily, so probably next week sometime he will be moved.

Dave I have a group of three from the same batch as yours and it wont be long before they put some size on. I keep mine with a couple of

Acanthodoras cataphractus

without any problems

have a 8" trachy in a 400ltr bow front he's in with a similar sized common plec along with 2 7" oscars and a couple of red hooks,he's absolutely fine in there really active feeds well on mussels/prawns and sinking dried pellets etc BUT

today as we are setting up our new 800ltr tank i put my 8" Pterodoras granulosus in his tank as a temp measure he got very unhappy and chased the poor Doradidae all over the place so a quick removal was req my stupidity and to be fair all has calmed down now

Wow i must admit my trachy is a fine mate to a common plec and 8 mid sized silver dollars (he was with 2 oscars originally but they moved into the 800ltr) but have never seen any "over"aggression but he does like to chase your fingers if your cleaning the tank and he pulls all the filter pipes and airlines off thier holders

I think what is going on is that either we have a had different species or different genders which would help to explain the aggressive/non aggressive nature of each fish, although having said that, I for one believe some fish have personalities just like us/dogs/cats/birds/other animals.
I have especially seen this in Uaru and many catfish.
