Breeding Dekeyseria sp. L052

I`l start a new tread, instead of posting in my original ID tread on this fish.. (mabe one of the moderators can move the picks in the other tread over to this?)

In the tank, there are this one breeding pair, and a group of L-270.
I only have the light on for 4-5 hours in tis thank (someone suggested that, reg, the L,270?)

When I turned on the light just now, there was new fry "hanging" on the glass, must be the 5th batch I think
I Havn`t found out where they lay there eggs until today, and that is under a flat stone, where they have digget out a cave.

Guess I`m doing something right, since I`w understood that this is not the easyest one to breed?

Are they just grazing on algae so far? What are you planning on feeding them? David

I give them additional algae wafers, and some vegetables. Also other food, since there are L-270 in the same tank.

There are so many fry/youngsters in there now, so I`l just have to go by "survival of the fittest"

I`l have to get rid of them also, but it is great fun to se new fish all the time

Breeding Dekeyseria sp. L052 has become fairly common. Maybe more frequently bred than L134 if you take the absolute numbers of keepers who have L052 vs L134 into consideration. A fewer number of keepers are breeding them more frequently that an equal number of L134 keepers trying to breed them. Seems to be a prolific species for a fairly small species.

I know of more breeders of L052 in the USA than I know who breed L134.
The wild L052 sell for a much lower price than L134 and when they are small they resemble each other quite a bit so that has made L052 a popular species.
Bev Newcomer, www.theamazonbasement.com always has a lot of F1 L052 for sale and she runs an on line fish store.

Quite the opposite in Norway. L-134 is bred more than L-052. There is a lot of youngsters from L-134 for sale.
I have never seen youngsters from L-052 for sale, at least not here in Norway.

I have a good group of L-134 here, some of them are called Sp tiger? Got quite a different pattern than the "usual" one.

I don't believe this species is being bred very regularly - not so much because it's harder to breed than the Peckoltia species, but because there aren't as many keepers. There are nearly 6 times as many keepers of

Peckoltia compta

than there are of

Dekeyseria sp(L052)

. L052 may breed slightly larger groups of fry [judging by the clutch of eggs I had] than what I think L134 will produce.

Judging by the fish I saw in Wildwoods some months back, it is certainly not a small fish - that male that I saw was about 6-7" long.

There has not been a single spawn, by my pair, since I moved some roots and stones around in the tank a few months ago...

Today, I picked out some L-cats, that I have kept in there for a few days.
Then I saw the size of the pair, they are HUGE, and sure not pretty, as the young ones.

They are very nice, aren't they. I see them on export lists from Colombia from time to time, but rarely in the shops.

Anyone going to Norway any time soon? ;)

Of course, I had a breeding group (they laid eggs), but I still haven't got the name of the person that my wife gave my fish to.

Nice fry. They differ a lot compared to the adults. I like the striping of the juvies more than the adults.

Very impressive, especially since I have more than killed my legal limit of these fish. As you know they come from very soft and acidic waters, so I am guessing your success is in part due to your great local water supply. My experience was that when kept in even somewhat hard, slightly alkaline water they perished in a few weeks to months. Since I could pick them up as bycatch in Discus/Uaru shipments in Bogota for about US $3.00 each, I kept trying and trying until I had to say enough is enough.

Nice to hear Shane (that I`w done some "unusual breeding) In Norway, this is no big deal. I`w lowered the Ph today, to se if I can get them going again.

When they started spawning, there were some new roots in the tank, that I guess lowered the Ph.
I have added some oak leaves today, to lower the Ph slowly.

Would it be safe to assume their breeding requirements are similar to L168?
If so, until my recent large scale loss of 95%+ of my L cats, I was breeding 168's every 4-6 weeks.
I have a fairly in depth report on another forum if anyone would like me to add it.

It should be similar, but I have found Rio Atabapo fishes to be more sensitive or "touchy" than Rio Negro fishes. The cichlid experts may be best positioned to answer this as altum angels and Uaru from the Atabapo and Discus and angels from the Negro have been popular and available much longer in the hobby than catfishes from these locations.

After lowering the Ph in the L-052 tank. they have made a large cave (same as last spawning) under some stones.
Hopefully they will start again.

Found this in my tank with L_052 and L-270. Judging by the size and numbers of eggs, I think they are from L-052?
Eggs where stuck to the "roof stone" of a natural cave I made.
