Hypancistrus sp. ???

I got 12 of these fellas today, between 20-30mm. Sorry for the lousy pictures, they are from my iphone whilst still in the shop tanks. I'll update the thread when I get better pics. But for the time being what are your opinions on them?

Yes I think Hypancistrus sp. Could be hybrids.
They look a lot like mine, here's my topic of my fish.
These pics in this topic are from the oldest fish, the younger fish (are not on pic in this topic) are more like yours.

So maybe your fish could also be Hypancistrus sp. Gurupa.

Either Hypancistrus L66 or L333.
I lean more towards L333 which is quite variable. Several L-numbers or names like "Hypancistrus "Lower Rio Xingu" get applied to fish I consider to be all just variants of L333. At their present size they resemble both L66 and L333 and only time will tell which one they really are. L66 adults are relatively slender compared to adult L333.
Their small size makes me think they are tank raised. If that is true what is the breeder calling them or the shop selling them?

Hi,

they are very small. It is very difficult to identify juvenile Hypancistrus. Looks like a variant of L 333.
These are tankbred Hypancistrus, so you just have to ask the breeder.

The fish is L66, I bred them.

The breeding colony consists of 9 wc and 4 tank bred from a different source.

Apisto is correct in stating that the L66 is more slender than 333, and the forked tail on the parents of the fish is far more pronounced than the fish in my 333 colony.

Yes, they are L066, I already 'knew' this before, but just wanted to see what L numbers people would throw at me.

Across the forums I posted these on, these were the others suggested for them: L236, L333, L399, L400, Hyp. 'Gurupa'.

I wanted to highlight the difficulties and differences in opinions that people have when it comes to scribbly Hypancistrus. In all honesty I'm not fussed about what are they, it's more poignant to say that they were pretty enough to turn the head of a dedicated Panaque fan, a big credit to the breeder (Mungo).

It is not easy to take photos of any of the "scribbly Hypancistrus" species.
Both adults and juveniles transferred to a photo tank fade into their fright colors and the difference is dramatic.
This phenomenon greatly complicates what is already a difficult task of identifying these types of Hypancistrus.
Just my opinion, but I think most L333 types will eventually be resolved down to only a couple described species which are highly variable in their markings' colors depending on where they come from although there can be so much variation within a single area's scribbled Hypancistrus, too. Selective breeders, start your engines!

Regardless of what L# they turn out to be they are beautiful plecos! I have a small group of 4 that look very much like them that were sold to me as L066 as well. One of my favorites!

I agree. I think L66 are among the most handsome of the larger Hypancistrus. I decided L333 would be the largest species I would breed and sold all my L66 several years ago. L66 can get pretty large but they remain a very pretty species.

they have the eyes of L066, just younger then mine so i wasnt sure.

Plus I am always reluctant to weigh in on matters of hypans.
