Looking to buy a gulper.......

Post by dpk2313 »

Im looking to buy a gulper catfish and was wondering if there are any tips or information not listed on the Cat-eLog that current or former keepers have learned that could help me.

He will be housed alone in a 75gallon tank with medium sized rounded substrate, large pieces of driftwood/branches, some larger plants (real), and 2 ac110's filtering. Specimen will be 10-12"

Thanks in advance

Don't have much experience with gulper cats, but if you plan on getting any tank mates you will need a much larger tank to ensure that it's tankmate can move okay. As much as I love gulper cats, I don't think I would ever get one as I love stocking my fish tanks with many different fish and that would require a monster tank.

It will most likely be a species/single tank considering any tank mates will need to be 24"+ to avoid being eaten.

Do you mean an Ogre catfish, Asterophysus batrachus? I've heard LFS workers refer to Ompoks from Siluridae family as gulpers too. Perhaps they were wrong, though.

I never had one but would really like to have. Riverwonders had one 1-footer for sale at $500. Ouch.
